Lal Bahadur Shastry was born on October 2, 1904 (He shares his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi), at Mughal Sarai. He was born to Sharada Prasad and Dulari Devi. He was brave, kind, and full of courage. Even as a boy, he was very kind to other people. Once, when he was taking a stroll with his uncle he was accosted by an old man who was selling fruits. The vendor offered to sell them a hundred fruits for an anna, as it was getting dark and he had to go back home. Lal Bahadur took pity on him and gave him one anna for the fruits and took them without even counting them.

After his school education, he joined Kashi Vidya Pita and studied there for four years. He was bright in subjects like Philosophy, Economics, Political science, and Social science. He was awarded the degree ‘Shastry’ while he studied at Kashi Vidyapita. He had to live on a meager two and a half rupees per month while he was a student.

Later he joined the Indian National Congress and participated in the Non-Cooperation movement and Dandi March. After Independence, he served as Home and Transport minister in U.P. Later he was appointed as Prime minister after Pt. Nehru’s death.

Once, before Independence, his daughter contracted smallpox. It was a dreadful killer in those days. At that time, Shastry was imprisoned. He sought permission to visit his daughter. The British Government agreed to release him on parole for 15 days on condition that he should not participate in any agitations. He refused to accept such conditions and wished to stay in prison. But eventually, the Government agreed and released him without condition. He came back home but unfortunately, his daughter died on them someday. After performing her funeral rites, he decided to return to prison, even when there were four days of parole left.

When Lal Bahadur Shastry was a Railway minister he made a lot of effort to reduce the vast difference between the first and last classes in the railway coaches. He made efforts to provide more facilities to travelers in the last class coaches and to eliminate thefts on trains.

Even as a Prime Minister of India he led a simple life. When he was a Railway minister, he accepted moral responsibility for a railway accident at Arialur had resigned for the ministry. When the country was facing a food shortage, he and his family ate only one meal a day and he also urged people of the country to eat less. When he was a Prime Minister, he could not even afford to own a car and had to buy a car after seeking a loan from the

A hare lived under a small palm shrub at the foot of a Bel tree. One day, a strange fear struck the hare. It started wondering what would happen to him if the earth fell to pieces. At the very moment, a huge ripe bet fruit fell right on top of the palm shrub with a loud crash. The hare was horrified and thought that the earth was surely falling to pieces around him. He madly fled away from the place.

Another hare, saw him fleeing asked him why he was running away scared. The fleeing hare asked the other hare not to question him, without even looking back. The other hare ran after him and insisted that he answer him. The fleeing hare replied that he was running away because the earth was falling to pieces.

So the other hare also joined him and as they were running another thousand hares joined them when they heard that the earth was falling to pieces. Later a deer, a boar, an antelope, a buffalo, a gazelle, a rhinoceros, a tiger and an elephant joined them. The line of animals stretched to about three miles.

Later a lion saw this wild flight of animals and asked them what it was all about. When they told him that the earth was felling to pieces, the lion thought to himself that, since there was no earth quake, they might have misunderstood some sound they had heard and started fleeing. He decided to stop them as he feared they all of them would come to destruction.

The lion sprang swiftly to the foot o fa hill ahead of all the animals and roared thrice at the top of his voice. All the animals were frightened and huddled up together and stood still.

Then the lion asked them why they were running away. All the animals answered in chorus that they were running away because the earth was falling to pieces. When the lion asked them, who had seen the earth falling, the animals started to point at each other. At last the first hare which had started all this came forward and spoke to the Lion. The j hare narrated all which had happened till then. The Lion realized that the hare had heard a ripe bel fruit fall down on the palm leaf with a crash and started running away believing that the earth was falling to pieces.

The Lion then ordered the other animals to stay where they were and took the hare to the place at the foot of the palm trees. After inspecting the place the lion found the ripe bel fruit which had come crashing down on the palm leaves. The Lion then understood everything. He asked the hare to jump on his back, and they went back to the other animals. 1 he wise Lion then spoke to the other animals and assured them that there was no earthquake or any other calamity and it was perspective safe for them to go back to the place they lived. All the animals thanked the lion and went back home.

Long ago there lived a person named Kaushika. Although he was proficient in the veda’s he wised to surpass all in learning and left home to meditate and pursue studies, in the forest.

Once, when he was sitting under a tree studying Vedas, he was distracted by the loud twittering of a crane which was sitting on a tree, above him. Kaushika looked up and glared at the bird and it was reduced to ashes. Kaushika felt sorry for having caused the bird’s death but was also pleased by his ascetic powers.

He went to a nearby town to seek alms, and stood before a house and begged for alms The mistress was busy attending to her husband and took some time to bring him alms. When Kaushika glared at her, the lady smiled and said that she was not a crane which he could bum with his glare. Kaushika was astonished and wondered how the lady knew of the incident then the woman explained Kaushika, that he might have mastered the Vedas but he was ignorant of the mysteries of Dharma and asked him to go to Mithila to learn about the mysteries of Dharma from a men called Dharmavyadha.

Kaushika then went to Mithila and met Dharmavyadha. Dharmavyadha was a meat seller. When Dharmavyadha saw Kaushika he warmly welcomed him and asked him if a chaste women had sent him to meet him. Kaustika felt humbed. He had always imagined that he was the only learned man. But he now realised that it was not so. Later Kaushika humbly requested Dharmavyadha to tell him about the mysteries of Dharma.

Dharmavyadha humbly told Kaushika that he could only tell him about the path he followed. He was of the opinion that one should engage oneself in his duties, be truthful, patient and merciful. One should not be elated in happiness or depressed in difficulties. One should always be engaged in prayers and tapas and should appreciate the good qualities in others. He also told Kaushika that though he followed the hereditary profession of selling meat he did not kill animals and had never uttered a lie and therefore had no enemies. He said that his foremost duty was to serve his parents with devotion because their blessings were like a shield to him.

Later Dharmavyadha took Kaushika to his house to meet his parents He prostrated before them and sought their blessings. Kaushika also bowed before Dharmavyadha’s parents and sought their blessings. Then Kaushika humbly bowed before Dharmavyadha and told 1 rim liis arrogance had evaporated and that Dharmavyada had opened his eyes. He tells Dharmavyadha that from then on he shall join his parents and serve them and also cultivate the virtue that Dharmavyada followed. Kaushika returned home and spent his days serving his parents and teaching the Vedas.
