Taro – A loving son

There lived a woodcutter named Taro in a village of Japan with his family. He earned his living by wood – cutting and lived on a hill side. His income was meager; he could fulfill the basic needs of the family.

One day, through the cracks of his hut cold winds shivered Taro’s father. At this Taro’s father wished for a cup of sake’, a drink to warm his body. Taro was sad as he could not afford to get the drink.

So he decided to work harder to ‘ earn more money. Next day he got up early to cut more woods. He went to drink water from a nearly fountain as he was thirsty.

He found that the taste of the water was different. Then he realized that it was sake’. He filled the pitcher with it. He brought it along and gave it to his father. After taking a sip of it, the father stopped shivering and danced a little.

That day a visitor came and Taro offered the sake to her and told the whole story about sake’. Next morning all the villagers reached there before Taro.

The village went to the waterfall with pitchers etc. But they found that it was only water. So they were very angry with Taro. Taro had to save himself from the anguish of the villagers. But when he tasted himself. It was again the same sake’.

The news reached the ears of the Emperor, Taro was rewarded by the emperor of Japan for being good and kind.

On the day of hearing Algu and Sahu put forward their case. They were interrogated deeply. Then Jumman stood up to give a verdict and announced that Sahu should pay the price of the bullock to Algu. Then Algu embraced Jumman and they were friends again.

On last day of the school, the elf left secretly through the back door. It did not want to stay longer as the work was tiresome for it.

At the end of the semester, Patrick surprised everyone by scoring A grade. Actually it was achieved only through his own hard work. His teachers, parents, and friends wondered for the positive changes in his personality.

He became the inspiration for others. He did all his chores by himself. He was liked and appreciated by everyone. While helping the elf Patrick had learned to work hard and finally, the success was his not that of the elf.

The bear hid himself and then ran into the forest when he learned that a lion was around. He told the dog that a lion is the strongest beast on earth. So dog left bear to serve his new master, the lion.

The lion also agreed to take up the dog as his servant. The dog was happy with him as it had a better life and food. It was not afraid of any other animals now.

Its happiness did not last longer as one day, while walking a path amongst cliffs, the lion stopped angrily and quietly moved away. The dog was shocked to see its master in such a situation, so he asked about the reasons.

The lion asked it to moved away from there as human beings are the dangerous and strongest on earth.

This made dog to serve the man as he realised the power and strength of a man. It served him faithfully for years to follow even till today.

The story opens in a school where a girl’s eyes were covered with a bandage and she was directed by a boy, who was about four years younger to her.

The narrator described the head mistress named Miss Beam who was a middle-aged, strict yet understanding woman. She informed that in the school, the students were taught vocabulary, mathematics and writing but the real aim of teaching was to evoke thoughtfulness and kindness.

She wanted her students to be responsible citizen.

She asked the narrator to look out of the window. There, he observed that a few differently-abled children who were unable to play like others. He was corrected by Miss Beam saying that it was their ‘lame day’. In her opinion, students should appreciate and understand misfortune.

Her objective was to make her students experience the pain of deformity. In each term every child had one blind day, one lame day, one deaf day, one injured day and one dumb day.

On blind day the students promised not to peep through the bandage. Other students were given duty to assist and guide to make a collaborative effort.

She reiterated that the experiment was successful and there was no scope of unpleasantness. The students took it sportingly and they realised the real situation.

Thereafter, he was given a chance to interact with a girl. She was blind that day. She told him about her experience. She said that the helper was sensitive enough to help her.

When he asked her to come along, she took him for a walk. She informed him about the ‘the lame days’, she had experienced. She was afraid of being blind at the most.

She told him about a girl, Millie, the head girl, who was walking with Miss Beam. She also talked about the gardener, Peter.

The whole experience made the narrator thoughtful and left the school with heavy heart.

The inquisitive mind of a child is getting insecure and it starts having strange thoughts and ideas. The baseless questions never get a befitting reply unless one reaches a maturity.

The hyper active mind of a child needs to work on one or other work. The child was lying when various thoughts come to his mind. These questions kept him busy the whole night. His worries were baseless.

He has apprehension he is the most dumb child in the school or what will happen if the swimming pool is closed. What if he is hurt or what if somebody pours poison in his cup. He is anxious about crying or fall sick to the stage that leads to death.

There may be the possibility of failing the test or growing green hair on his chest. The imaginary questions falls back on his mind. He imagines the chances of lightning flashing on him. He wanted to grow tall and had a weird imagination of becoming smaller.

His chief concern about his parents was what if they get, divorced. What will happen if a war starts or the bus comes late? His aspiration to dance and fly a kite bothers him. His looks seem to be a matter of concern for him. What will happen if his teeth don’t go straight?

The child becomes involved with other activities during the day until the fall of the night which reignites his inquiring mind.

The poet speaks about his childhood day. He was attracted with liberty enjoyed by a bangle seller, a gardener and a watchman. He was jealous, as he could not have that freedom.

He wanted to be free from routine and schedule forced upon him. He wanted to bask in the sunshine and to get drenched in the rain. He wanted to play with his shadow.

The poet leaves for school at the sound of gong when it struck ten. The child passes through his lane everyday and come across a hawker. The hawker sells bangle. He seems to be in no hurry as he need not to reach anywhere quite opposite to the poet.

The statements imply that the child has to follow various schedule and timings. He wanted to enjoy the freedom enjoyed by the bangle seller.

He also compares his life with a gardener who works in a house. When he returns from school at four, he envies the life of the gardener and he wishes if he were a gardener.

The poet finds him enjoying playing with the tools, nobody stops him from basking in the sun. His clothes get soiled with dust, he enjoys rain too. Whereas the poet is questioned and often directed.

The boy talks about the life and routine of a watchman. The watchman enjoys his freedom at night but mother of the poet puts him to bed in the late evenings.

The watchman roams around in the streets enjoying full liberty. He swings his lantern and roams around. The poet wishes to lead life of a watchman. The poet longs for freedom.
