Adventures with Books [Textbook Pages 30 – 37]

Summary of the Poem

This poem is all about the features of books. Books contain a lot of adventures and tales Reading a book gives one a lot of varied experiences. We travel in ships sailing in the seas. We cross the lands of snow. We see jungle trees. The poet feels to be the captain of the ship who can choose what to see and what to avoid. The poet invites us to sail the magic ship. Further the poet says that books are like trains travelling through many lands crossing hills and deserts.

Here the poet feels like being an engineer guiding the train to make it more adventurous. Books are full of the stories of birds and beasts. Here books are like zoos and the poet becomes the keeper of the zoo. Books give us experiences of fairies, elves, comboys and people like us. Here books appear to be beautiful gardens. We feel excited and have a lot of mixed reactions. All the way reading is a fun.

Summary in Hindi

उधार ली गई किताबों के नाम थे— The Island of Adventure, The Secret Seven, Treasure Island, आदि ।

D.1. Read it Yourself.

Thank you, Rinku [Textbook Pages 49-50]

Summary of the Poem

The writer, now a grown-up lady, remembers her childhood days when she enjoyed friendship with Rinku, who was one year older than her. She was six and Rinku was seven, when they first met. Rinku lived a few houses from hers. Being older than her she was her boss and she (writer) felt no hesitation in obeying her commands. The writer remembers how Rinku introduced her to fish, to butter rice, to lace stockings and to books. She had no interest in books. But Rinku developed in her heart a love for reading.

She made her read stories of Enid Blyton and novels like Malony Towers, The Famous Five and The Secret Seven. She didn’t stop her efforts unless the writer developed a hunger for books. At the time when she turned thirteen she had already read the Nancy Drew Series and famous novels of R.K. Narayan, James Herriot, Agatha Christie, and many more. The writer could live only two years in contact of Rinku but the priceless gift that she gave to her always remained with her. And when her son turned six she passed on this gift to him.

Summary in Hindi

उसने उसे एनिड ब्लाटन की कहानियाँ और Malony Towers, The Famous Five और The Secret Seven जैसे उपन्यास पढ़ने के लायक बनाया।

(a) Discuss why teachers get a headache while dealing with children?
Answer:
Dealing with children is not an easy task. With forty to forty-five students in a class, it is very tough to pay attention to all the students equally. Class management is another problem because all the students are not of the same nature. Some are self-disciplined and don’t create problems but a great number of them are naughty and require constant attention. Teachers have to face this situation everyday and so frequently become victims of headache.

(b) Do you create any problem for your teacher?
Answer:
Honestly speaking I don’t create problems for my teachers. Perhaps therefore all my teachers love me and value my words. I also adore them from the core of my heart.

Work with your partner. Write down what you like or dislike about your school life.
Answer:
I fully agree with Sachin. School is that place where we get opportunities to exhibit our hidden talent. We come
across so many children of our age group, learn many new things, play our favourite games, make friends and sometimes fight too, for which our teacher punish us. These sweet and sour experiences of school add beauty to our life.

A.2. Now read the following story. [Textbook Pages 3 – 5]

Monday Morning Blues Summary of the Story

Tom Sawyer did not want to get up on Monday mornings because it meant going back to school. And school was such a painful place for him. He lay in bed late thinking about some excuses. Suddenly he discovered that one of his upper front teeth was loose. He decided to use it as an excuse for not going to school. He began to groan loudly. Aunt Polly hurried upstairs. She was treambling with fear. She loved Tom too much and did not see him in troubles. She asked him what was going wrong with him. Tom changed his excuse immediately and told his aunty that his sore toe was going to fall off.

Aunt Polly instead of becoming panicked began to laugh. Tom felt foolish because his act was caught. He then shifted to his previous excuse and told aunty that he had a severe toothache. Aunt Polly asked for a silk thread and a chunk of fire to take out his loose tooth. Tom got panicked to think about the dental instruments and admitted that he was just making excuses for not going to school because he loved fishing too much. Now he would not stay at home and will go to school. By this time Aunt Polly was ready with her dental instruments. She took out Tom’s loose tooth inspite of his resistance.

B.2. Now read the following story about Swaminathan who gets very angrywith his friends for something. Is he able to solve his problem or does it lead to another light? [Textbook Pages 12 – 15]

The Tale of a Tail Summary of the Story

Swaminathan was a V-Grade student. One day, as soon as he entered his classroom, all the students started laughing quietly. He, however, remained hopeful that he was not the cause of the laughing. He took his seat but the giggling was on. Suddenly his eyes fell on the blackboard on which a word ‘Tail’ was written in huge letters. Swaminathan was out of control due to anger. He approached Pea and gave him a fierce slap on his cheek. Pea burst into tears and swore that he did not do it. Then Swaminathan turned to Shankar and slapped his face also. Soon the three boys (Swaminathan, Shankar and Pea) began to fight.

The bell rang. Just then Raj am, Somu and Mani entered. The teacher came in thereafter and stood aghast. He could do nothing to silent the class and let all the five friends (Swaminathan, Mani, Rajam, Shankar and Pea) go out.

The five friends came to a lonely spot to settle the dispute. Swaminathan wanted to know who among them had written the word ‘Tail’ on the blackboard. But no one was ready to admit his fault. When Mani asked him what was a tail anyway, Swaminathan began to sob. He told Mani that they called him Rajam’s tail. Mani and Rajam were not on good terms. So, he (Mani) could not help Swaminathan. Since he thought too much of himself and his powers he began to shout at Pea, Shankar and Somu. This led to a fierce fighting again which continued till the Headmaster arrived there. He separated Somu and Mani and restored peace.

(i) ignored the word ‘Tail’ written on the board?
(ii) laughed along to avoid argument or fight?
(iii) talked to your classmates and resolved the matter peacefully?
(iv) complained to your teacher?
Explain with reasons.
Answer:
(ii) laughed along to avoid argument or fight.

I think such things should be laughed out. Swaminathan committed a mistake by reacting so sharply over trifles. It was not a serious matter. Even if it was a serious matter, one should always avoid argument or fight because it leads to violence. I believe in peace and do my best to maintain it.

B.9. Value Based Questions

In Indian Culture, the teacher /guru is considered next only to God. Do you approve of Somu and Mani’s attitude towards their Tamil teacher? How should students behave with their teachers?
Answer:
No, I don’t approve of Somu and Mani’s attitude towards their Tamil teacher. There should be a cordial relation discipline in the classroom especially in front of their teachers. Talking and laughing loudly and getting involved in fighting are undoubtedly bad manners. Students show their indecency by doing these activities. They should be well behaved and adore their teachers. They should pay proper respect to them by obeying their words.

To The Glacier Summary

In 1900, radios and movies were only invented but television did not exist. In 1895, a machine called cinematography
was invented by the two brothers named Louis and Auguste Lumiere. The first movie show was given in Paris in 1895 and cinema was born. It became so famous that now USA was the movie capital of the world. These pictures had no sound by that time. Very soon in 1927, a talking picture named ‘Jazz Singer was made. These films were shown in small theatres called Nickelodeons.

The first mechanical television was invented by John Logie Baird of Britain in 1926. The BBC also began giving regular T.V. broadcasts on television in 1936. But at that time quite a few people had television at their homes as it was very expensive. The satellite services were also started from 1962. By the help of satellites, the images filmed at one place could be shown all over the world. Television became so famous that according to one survey an average teenager used to spend 23 hours in front of television in a week. In order to compete with television the movie makers now have to spend large amount of money for creating special effects.

Making Movies Summary

In this extract the world famous film maker Satyajit Ray shares some of his experiences of shooting. ‘Pather Panchali’ was his debut film which received international fame. This film took over two and a half years to complete due to shortage of money and time. This film was shot by Mr. Satyajit Ray in holidays. For this film, a little boy for the role of Apu was required. One advertisement was given in the newspaper but all in vain.

No suitable boy was found through the advertisement. One day when Mr. Ray’s wife had gone to the roof, came down and told Mr. Ray to call the little boy who was playing on the roof of the next door house. This boy named Subeer Banerjee played the role of Apu in this film. The first shot had to be that at a place called Palsit in Kolkata by the side of a railway track. Here the field was filled with grass named Kash.

In this scene the two children Durga and Apu were shown to see the train for the first time. This scene took two days to be shot. After taking half of the shot they went back to Kolkata. When the unit returned after one week to shoot the rest of the scene, they found no Kash in the field. The people told them that the cows had eaten all the Kash flowers so they had to wait for new season for shooting when new Kash flowers would grow. For this scene three trains were used. In this film Mr. Ray has also featured a pet dog named Bhulo.

There is a scene in the film in which Apu’s mother Sarbajaya is feeding her son. But Apu wants to play with his bows and arrows. Apu’s mother throws the rice on a heap of rubbish and Bhulo ate them away. But due to lack of light and money the shot could not be taken. After six months when they came back they were told that Bhulo had died. Then another dog resembling Bhulo was searched and the shots were taken. But nobody could ever make out that the two dogs were different.

He dialled the number. He passed the first round and after that the final round of entering the quiz show. At last he was chosen among the first ten people who flew to New York City to participate in the show.

After two weeks they were taken for the competition. They were given a packed lunch there. After that the narrator cleared the fastest finger round and was at the-hot seat in front of Regis Phibin. All the participants were told that they would get three life lines during the show. As soon as Regis started questioning, the narrator was confused. The narrator, however, managed to win $ 64000.

Now for the next question if he could answer correctly he would have won $125000 and for the wrong answer he would have dropped to $ 32000. The narrator thought about the viewers who were watching him and saying that he should have gone for this question as he himselfused to say for the other participants. Anyhow the narrator didn’t have the courage to lose the amount. He decided to quit. Regis asked him to guess the answer for the last question. It was right but now nothing could be done.

Who wants to be a Millionaire’ रखा गया।

To The Glacier Summary

Once upon a time there were four boys who had set out to cover the last dak bungalow which was 10,000 feet above the sea level. The glacier was seven miles away from this bungalow. They had finished all the eatables brought with them. At such a height there was no human being. Only animals like snow bears were found there. They explored a snow field which looked like a valley of Gods. They all sat on rocks to rest for a while.

It was a sunny day and they all sat there to have a sun bath. Suddenly they heard the sound of thunder. All the boys rushed to find some shelter in a nearby cave. It started raining heavily there. Anil had a pocket knife with which all of them carved their names on the rocks of the cave. It was dark all around. The path became very slippery due to rain. They would have slipped in a hole but had a narrow escape due to the moonlight. So they all decided to go back to the cave.

The next morning they again started to climb up but as Kamal dared to take a few steps on the loose pebbles, the ground gave way. They had to grab him by the arms and shoulders. All were soon on the glacier. It was again very slippery there. The narrator also sprained his wrist and hurt his knee due to that. They climbed down back from the way as it was a very narrow passage which brought them back to the dak bungalow.

A.7. Values

India has a rich heritage that includes incredibly beautiful monuments and archaeological masterpieces but it is plainful to note that some people deface them by inscribing on them their initials or names or some messages.

DAV Class 6 English Reader Book Solutions Chapter 5 Vacation Time 4

As a responsible citizen of the country, what is your role in protecting these national treasures? Discuss with your partner.
You may use hints given in the box below.

  • Monuments – pride of the nation, epitome of glorious past
  • Need of the hour – spread awareness
  • Sensitise – the youth

Answer:
Very often we have seen that people are in the habit of defacing public monuments. Be it ‘Hawa Mahal’ in Jaipur or ‘Red Fort’ in Delhi – everywhere one can see red stains from betel (paan) spits defacing the walls. Tourists often want to write the dates and year also when they visited the monument. We are spoiling our own national heritage in this manner. Tourist from other nations come to see these monuments only. As a responsible citizen of India, I would like to create awareness about it through social media like Twitter. We can also put up posters and hoardings to educate Indian tourists.

Dear Diary,

Today I came back from Shimla in the morning. I had gone there for a mountaineering expedition with my friends. We all enjoyed so much. We didn’t stay in a hotel but in a camp. It was a new experience for all of us. Then, we went for rock climbing, cycling, hiking and trekking. We had joined a reputed mountaineering club for this. Our instructor was a very friendly person. He taught us all these skills. Then, we also got a chance to go for rafting. None of us had done it before.

Next year also I am planning to join the same mountaineering club during my summer vacations.

B.3. CHILDREN SHOULD BE EDUCATED AT HOME!

The children in Aditi’s class were asked to present a viewpoint in the class. Aditi decided to talk about schools and why children should be educated at home. She made some notes first and then worked out the presentation. Read Aditi’s notes and her presentation.

DAV Class 6 English Reader Book Solutions Chapter 5 Vacation Time 10

In my opinion, children should be educated at home because—

  1. The government would save a lot of money. It would not need to build schools, pay teachers, pa}’ electricity bills or pay for books and materials. The money
saved could be spent on far more important things like feeding the homeless, medical research and improving hospitals.
  2. Technology has improved so much; children can learn just as much at home from computers. Parents could be trained to use computers to help children to learn.
  3. There would be no distraction at home. If children are working in a noisy room, they cannot learn much, but in their own homes they can learn a lot.
  4. There would be no teasing. Some children get upset being teased by seniors. This would not be a problem at home.
  5. Children would be safer at home. There would be no fear of traffic accidents on way to school or on way home. Parents would not have to worry about their children talking to strangers. —Aditi Guleria

B.4. Based on your reading of Aditi’s viewpoint, answer the following questions.

(a) How would the system of ‘education at home’ aid the government in saving money?
Answer:
Government would not have to build schools, pay the teachers, pay electricity bills, for books, etc.

(b) What role can technology play in facilitating it?
Answer:
Children can learn as much as possible through computers.

(c) Why, according to Aditi, would the children be able to concentrate better if they were educated at home?
Answer:
Yes, there would be less distraction, no teasing and safe environment.

(d) In what way would this system of education ensure greater safety for children?
Answer:
There would be no fear of accidents while going or coming back from school. Children would be safe from strangers also.

B.5. HOTS

Imagine you are Manav, Aditi’s classmate. You have been given the task to convince Aditi about the importance of the traditional way of education system. Write a dialogue between the two of you.
Answer:
Manav : Aditi, I respect your viewpoint but for children life would be quite dull. Aditi: How?
Manav : You see that children enjoy going to school talking and playing with one another.
Aditi : That can be done at home also.
Manav: Then, teachers not only teach subject matter but also help in counselling.
Aditi : Yes, but parents can always go the counsellors.
Manav : Besides, going to schools helps to polish your debating skills, speaking skills.
Aditi : Yes, but children can attend competitions.
Manav : But then who will organise these competitions?
Aditi : So, we can say that schools and teachers are very important to get good education.

B.6. Values

  10. School helped to hone my speaking skills.

B.7. You are Varun Sharma. Imagine that the system of education proposed by Aditi becomes a reality. Write a letter to your friend describing what it would be like to live and study in a world without schools.
Answer:
15th July, 20XX
20, Model Town
Delhi

Dear Alok,

I hope this letter of mine finds you in the best health and high spirits. In your previous letter you asked me about my school.

Well, we don’t have schools now. Government has shut them down. We all are learning through computers. It is very dull and boring. The joy of getting up early, going to school, gossiping with my friends is all lost. Chatting through computers is not the same.

Even classes seem to be very dull. Interacting with teachers was very inspiring. Now, you send a question and keep on waiting for reply, sometimes internet connection is not there which makes it more cumbersome.

I wish that government restarts the schools once again.

Yours friend
Varun Sharma

Every Day is A Holiday Summary

Here the author is telling us about a few interesting holidays we celebrate throughout the world. The first one is the ‘World Hello Day’. On this day we have to say ‘hello’ to at least ten persons. It was started on third Sunday of November in 1973 after the end of a war in the Middle East to encourage world peace. This could be made possible only if people could come up and communicate with one another.

The McCormacks wrote letters in many languages and sent them to the leaders of many countries in the world telling them about the World Hello Day. Then McCormacks got a positive response and a holiday was declared every year on this day. McCormacks were congratulated by Pope John Paul II, former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain for making such an effort to bring people together.

The second one is International Day of the Seal. This day is celebrated on 22 March. Many aquariums and marine research centres around the world celebrate this day on the third weekend of March. This holiday was declared to tell people about the dangers seals face from pollution, oil spills etc. Many exhibitions are put up which educate the people about how the seals live, preserve and rescue and again return to their habitats.

The third one is the Do it Day. This day is celebrated on the first Wednesday in September but it is celebrated as per our convenience. The founder of this day was Ethel Cook. She found this day to do all the pending work and to get every thing organised.

तीसरा दिन ‘Do It Today’ है।

Word – Meanings:

Encourage = to give support – प्रोत्साहित करना;
Collision = an occasion when things or people collide – वस्तु या व्यक्तियों के बीच टक्कर;
Habitat = the natural home of a plant or an animal – पौधे या पशु का प्राकृतिक आवास;
Eventually = in the end, finally – अंत में|

Twin Melodies Summary

This story is written by Phukan Mitra. The story is about a girl named Shruti whose dream was to become a member of Fusion Band and play at the concert. But her father Nabin Sharma was strictly against the western music. Shruti was the best violinist of the Sangeetika Music School. Her father Guru Nabin Sharma was the principal of the school. Guru Nabin Sharma had gifted Shruti a baby violin when she was just six years old and now after nine years she had been playing so well that the listeners always wanted more from her.

Shruti wanted to tell her father about her dream of playing in a Fusion Band and she decided to tell this tonight to her father. That night when Shruti, her father Nabin Sharma and her mother Leela Devi were having their dinner, Shruti told her father that she wanted to participate in the concert. Her father reminded her that she could not have a public performance more than once in six months and she has had her performance a few weeks ago. Nabin Sharma asked her about the concert. Shruti hesitatingly told her father that it was a fusion group and she wanted to play in that group. Nabin Sharma was very strict as he wanted his music to be as pure as possible.

Shruti told that she had lied to her mother that she was going to attend the science classes. In fact she was in her practice session and the whole group depended upon her for the concert. Nabin Sharma refused Shruti to take part in the concert. The next day she went to tell the members of her band who were in fact her friends that she could not take part in the concert. When she reached there everybody was practising for the concert. Shruti wanted to play once for the last time. As they finished up they heard a sound of applause. Shruti was astonished when she saw that her parents Nabin Sharma and Leela Devi were standing there and clapping to their performance.

Nabin was very excited that Shruti has kept the spirit of their raga alive. She has not mixed both the music. Everybody in Shruti’s band was very excited to hear their praise. Shruti wondered about change in her father’s mind. Nabin Master confessed before Shruti that it was her mother Leela Devi who reminded him that once Nabin Sharma himself had argued with his father to take up a western instrument just like Shruti. But now after listening to band Nabin Sharma was confident that their show is going to be a great success. He invited all the members of Shruti’s group to come and practice in their school as all his fears of losing Shruti were baseless.

My First Visit to The Ballet Summary

This is an interesting poem of a girl who went to see ‘the Ballet’ for the first time. At that time she was hardly ten. She went to the theatre with her friend Lyuba. They took their tickets and settled into their seats. The girl was very excited. She only wanted to see the ballet caring about nothing. She always had the desire of watching a ballet. Her dream was going to come true that day. She wanted to see a lovely fairy who would come on the stage wearing a golden crown and a white dress. She sat with her eyes wide, opened, holding the ticket very tightly in her hand.

Suddenly, the trumpets and drum started beating. Hearing this both of them fell down on their seats. The girl realised that she didn’t have the tickets in her hand. The fairies had already come on the stage. They were dancing but she didn’t look at them. She was only searching the tickets everywhere on the floor. She crawled on the floor to the seventh row. The people wondered about who is crawling on the floor. She found the ticket but by then the ballet was over. Every one was going outside saying that it was a lovely ballet. She also decided to say the same to the school girls who would ask her about the ballet.

HEAL THE WORLD – NEED OF THE HOUR

In today’s time, there is a great need to heal the world. We all should live with harmony and love. We should try to help each other in the hour of need. Today we all are so ignorant that we hardly bother about others’ ambitions and desire. We all are busy in fulfilling our ambition. We don’t know why people have become so single-minded. Why do they forget that by helping each other they can achieve their ambition properly. If we don’t understand each other’s problem then how we can expect that our next generation will help each other. I would like to say that this is not a right way to live. In this way we are only inviting frustration and mental stress. At last I will only say that in order to live peacefully and successfully we should help each other, love each other and support each other. Only then this world can become a better place to live in.

C.1. Work with your partner. Write down what your views are about magic as a performing art. Is it a reality or an illusion?
Answer:
If you ask me about magic, I am of the opinion that magic is nothing but an illusion. Magic is not a reality, it just creates a psychic balance with the environment which makes the audience think that the magician is doing a magic in reality. It is nothing but a science that controls our mind and will-power. But people think that the magician has some supernatural power which is not the reality. Thus magic is merely an illusion of the mind.

He Really is the World’s Greatest Magician Summary

P.C. Sorcar is a very famous magician who is known for his magic in the country and abroad. He was having a show in the New Empire Theatre, Calcutta. We changed our flight to see his show as we could not afford to miss the show. When we reached the theatre we saw that P.C. Sorcar was rehearsing on back stage. The rehearsal took him 40 hours. P. C. Sorcar made us sit in the box office where we saw that all the advance booking seats were full. We walked around the city and found that everybody knew P.C. Sorcar there.

On the opening night the house was full and all types of people from all the regions had come to see the show. The show was two and half hours long and was the best show we had ever seen in our lives. Sorcar has an ability to make people laugh even in the most unlikely situation which holds the audience for a long time. Water from India’ which is produced by Sorcar with a large number of assistants is also a beautiful show. In this, a priest, wearing an orange robe comes in with a silver pitcher on a tray and calls Sorcar that it was a water from India.

Sorcar then calls upon people from Indian region and fills up their glass. His ‘Broomstick’ is also mind blowing. In this, there is the scene of the street in the city. It is dawn and people are just moving round. There is a little boy who is sculling newspaper on crutches. Sorcar took the boys’ crutches and put the boy upon it. Then he took another boy’s hula hoop and put it over the boy. In the end, the same boy threw the crutches away and skipped off the stage. Such shows are beautifully presented by Sorcar. Everything Sorcar does is done by putting his best efforts into the show which makes his show the best in the magic world.

Ramu told them that his father had been transferred here due to which he had to leave his previous school which he liked very much. The next question the headmaster asked was about the best thing of the town. Ramu promptly replied that the Uchipallayyar Kovil, the temple of Lord Ganesha from where one could have a grand view of the town, was the best thing of the town.

The headmaster quickly asked how many steps did he take to climb up the temple. Ramu quickly answered. He took the same number of steps to climb up, he had taken to come down. The next question was asked about his fun. The last question which was put up to Ramu was about his short height. Ramu replied without hesitation that nobody in the family was tall. He also told them that once when his father was put up the same question by his boss he replied that his legs were long enough to reach the ground. Hearing his smart reply, the headmaster him the form and told to gave deposit the fees.

Girl Gang Summary

This story is about the friendship of a group of girls. In this story the author shows how all of them help one another to find the solution of their problems. On one Saturday afternoon Alice was going for shopping in a train. She saw that her classmate Kirsty was also travelling in the same train. A ticket checker came to check the ticket. She told the checker that she might have lost the ticket and had no money to buy another ticket. The checker told her that she would be taken to authority in that case. Kirsty begged before him to forgive her but it was of no use.

One day after school when Alice was about to leave for her home Kirsty came running to her and told her if their geography teacher whom they called the Old Sour Breath comes asking about Kirsty, Alice should pretend that she had not seen her. When geography teacher Mr. Sawyer came and asked about Kirsty, she simply lied that she had not seen her. The teacher took her to the classroom to show what Kirsty had done to the class. All the maps and displays were torn into pieces and everything was lying on the floor. When she came out, she saw that Kirsty was waiting for her outside the school gate with her four friends.

Alice told Kirsty that she had told nothing to Mr. Sawyer. Kirsty told that it was a revenge on Mr. Sawyer as he took girls as inferior one. Next day when Alice opened her geography book she found a note from Kirsty to meet her urgently at 8 o’clock in the park at night. At night the girls assembled in the park. A girl named Sandra was their leader. They all gathered there to take revenge from the ticket collector. They had a bag full of apples which they bombarded on the conductor’s house and ran away. Kirsty told Alice not to utter a word about the incident in front of anybody. Now Alice was the new member of the girl’s power gang.

Aerodynamic Mishap

I made a paper aeroplane
It really was the best,
I took my time to make it right
To that I can attest!

I’d planned it all so thoroughly,
I’d sketched from either side,
I knew that all would be amazed
To see it swoop and dive,

But its first flight was not too planned
Though it soared up high,
The teacher turned, it crashed and burned
And hit her in the eye!

My plane, screwed up, went in the bin,
All agreed it was a shame.
But my teacher’s got a big black eye,
And I’m the one to blame!
Answer:
Do it yourself.

The Inside – Out Stocking Summary

Once upon a time there was a little unlucky boy named Rex. He always had some or the other reason for him being unlucky such as he would fall down while running or loose a pound from the hole of his pocket. Rex was very good at running races. Once a sports meet was being organised in his school, in which all the sports events such as running, obstacle race and other games were going to take place. Many schools were also taking part in the sports meet. Rex’s headmaster asked him to take part in running race. Then he told his headmaster about how unlucky he was.

He told his headmaster that on that day he would surely have something due to which he would not be able to take part in the race. Lucy, Rex’s sister was very concerned about her brother. She wanted her brother to take part in the race as she was confident that her brother would win the race if he took part. In their own town, there lived an old lady Mother Brown. Lucy visited her and asked how she could bring luck to her brother. Mother Brown suggested that a black cat would bring luck to him. But there was no black cat in their village.

Then Mother Brown told her if on getting up in the morning you put on one of your stockings inside out without noticing then it might make you lucky for that day. Lucy had an idea in her mind. She walked back home and just a night before the sports day she waited for Rex to fall asleep and turned one of his stockings inside out. In the morning Rex put on his stocking inside out without noticing. Lucy and Rex went to the school and Rex won all the races without any obstruction. He was very happy. Lucy thought that she will do the same thing always for his brother to make him lucky. After that Rex usually won all the games and had many lucky days.
