Subject : Volunteering help for the flood affected people of Gomti Nagar

You would be aware that the flood situation in the city has become very grave, with water entering low lying areas of Gomti Nagar and Arjunganj, which are near my school. Our social service club has decided to help the district administration in providing relief to the flood affected families.

We have appealed to the students, to contribute for this noble cause, both in cash and kind. The cash so collected would be donated to the Chief Ministers’ flood relief fund, while the clothes, utensils, medicines and food would be distributed to the flood victims.

In order to ensure speedy relief, we have formed three teams, who would coordinate with the other agencies engaged in the work. While the first team would lend a helping hand to the Red Cross doctors and paramedical staff in the inoculation drive, to prevent the outbreak of epidemic. The second team would help the Swayam Sewak Dal in the distribution of clothes and other relief material. The third team would help other voluntary organisations and NGOs, in the preparation and distribution of food packets, water and milk.

Besides this, we would also be happy to provide any other help that you may suggest. This is the least we can do for our less fortunate brothers and sisters, in their hour of travail.

My dear Shweta,

I received your letter last week but was unable to reply, as I was busy with my half yearly exams. After the exams, I went with my friends to watch the movie, ‘The Lost World’. A movie on dinosaurs made by Steven Spielberg that has just been released. We bought the tickets and reached the theatre in the nick of time.

It was a splendid movie on dinosaurs that lived in an unknown island, far away from the continent. A team of scientists went there to study the environment and the behaviour of the dinosaurs. The news of this discovery also caught the attention of a team of hunters, who set forth to capture the dinosaurs, to rake in a fortune.

Initially the hunters were able to capture a few dinosaurs. However, soon the tide turned against them, when the dinosaurs took their revenge. The dinosaurs were so enraged by the hunters, that they killed most of them. The lucky ones that survived, decided to flee with their catch. The team of scientists on the other hand showed utmost concern for the dinosaurs, often endangering their own lives. The dinosaurs mistook them for hunters and turned their ire on them. Left with no alternative they also had to flee. They somehow reached a communication post, in the middle of the island.

Luckily the solar power radio was working and they made a distress call. Just as the dinosaurs were closing in on them, they were heroically picked up by a rescue helicopter. The hunters in the meantime had been successful in fleeing with one dinosaur and its baby. The ship that brought the dinosaurs to New York came crashing ashore, for the dinosaurs had eaten all the crew members. The dinosaur now roamed around the streets of New York, crushing everything from car to buses like match boxes, looking for its baby. Everyone was at their wits end, when suddenly it dawned on the scientist, that the only way to end the devastation, was to return the baby dinosaur to its mother. They located the baby dinosaur and cleverly placed it in a cage on a ship. The dinosaur came looking for it and was eventually caged in the ship, which set sail on its return voyage to release the dinosaurs in their natural habitat.

It was a movie full of imagination, very well conceived with a good script and screenplay. It took us million of years back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. In a very subtle but effective manner it portrays the evil of civilisation and explicitly brings out what could happen if the dinosaurs were to return. The movie was made marvellous, with excellent sound effects and photographic techniques. It left a deep impression in my mind. You should also see this movie, which I am sure you will like.

You would be shocked to know about the ordeal I had to face last week. I am yet to recover from the incident that took place last Saturday night.

I was alone with my mother, for my father had gone out of station on an official assignment. We were watching the television, when the call bell rang and my mother opened the door. All of a sudden three young ruffians forced their entry into the house. They held my mother at gunpoint and demanded the keys of the locker from her. While she was in the process of locating the keys, I got an opportunity of distracting the ruffian and knocked the pistol out of his hand. My shout of help made them panic. This was something they had not anticipated. Being taken aback they took to their heel, but not before I caught the leg of one of the desperadoes. 1 clung with all my might, as he desperately tried to free himself.

Hearing the commotion the neighbours came to my rescue. The desperado was overpowered and handed over to the police. I had become a hero overnight as press correspondents and cameramen crowded around me for an interview. This was splashed in the newspapers the next morning. I also learn that I have been chosen for the bravery award which is given to children on Republic Day.

I am happy and thank God for delivering us from the ordeal unscathed. I would like you to come to Delhi, and share my moment of glory,

My dear Mummy,

I am sorry for not having written to you for quite some time. I was a little upset recently because of an embarrassing incident due to my carelessness. However, now things are normal and there is no cause for worry.

Last Sunday I and my hostel friends decided to go for a picnic to Damdama Lake, a picnic spot on the outskirts of the city. We packed some eatables and set forth on our bicycles early in the morning. We enjoyed the picnic watched the alligators in the pond and played games till we were thoroughly exhausted. At dusk we decided to call it a day, and packed our baggage for the return journey. Unfortunately, my bicycle chain broke on the way, leaving me behind. I loaded the bicycle on a rickshaw and proceeded to Uncle Sharma’s house which was close by. I spent the night at his place.

On returning to my hostel the next morning, I was hauled up by my friends, who were unable to offer an explanation for my absence to the warden, who severely reprimanded them. Later I was admonished by the warden, for my carelessness in not informing my whereabouts. My friends had launched a massive manhunt for me, by ringing up my local guardian and friends. They spent a sleepless night and were contemplating to lodge an FIR with the local police in the morning. I felt guilty for the lapse; for it did not strike me that my absence would spell so much trouble. I felt ashamed and apologised, to the warden and I my friends for the embarrassment, I had unknowingly caused to them.

As punishment, I have been denied gate pass for the next three months. Hence It would not be able to spend Deepawali at uncle’s place. All the same I am happy for my friends have forgiven me and things are now back to normal.

Please do not worry about me. Give my love to Rohit and regards to Daddy. I shall be writing to them soon.

I received your letter yesterday and was sad to learn that you are down with jaundice, since last week. I hope you will recover soon, and join us at the summer camp, being held at Kempty Falls in Mussoorie, from 15th May to 30th May. You will be happy to know that I have been made the incharge of the camping group.

The venue of the camp is very picturesque. It is located in the Garhwal hills and is famous for the waterfall. People from far – off places come to see this waterfall, which is a major tourist attraction. There will be ample opportunity for hiking and mountaineering, which we all are anxiously looking forward to.

We shall board Doon Express at 7 P.M. from Charbagh railway station in Lucknow on 14th May. Hence we must assemble at the station by 6 P.M.. During this time of the year the weather there will be pretty cold. You should therefore carry with you, some woollen garments, along with camping gear, like torch, matches, rope, binocular and camera, etc. In your case, you should also bring medicines that have been prescribed by the doctor. Please take your doctor’s advice, before confirming your participation in the camp.
