Dear Sir

Subject : Outbreak of malaria epidemic in the city of Lucknow

The onset of monsoon has aggravated the problem of waterlogging in the city of Lucknow. One has to wade through knee-deep water to reach office or school when it rains. This problem is more acute in the old city areas of Lucknow like Chowk, Daliganj and Thakurganj. The drainage system here is in shambles, causing great hardships to the residents of these localities. The stagnant water in the choked drains and low lying areas, is the breeding ground for mosquitoes, that has resulted in the outbreak of malaria in these localities.

There is immediate need to clear the choked drains and pump out the stagnant water from the low-lying areas. To curtail the spread of the epidemic spraying of disinfectants and fogging is immediately required in these localities. To help those already infected with malaria, there is need to set up a special health camps for providing prompt medical aid.

I am sure you will appreciate the gravity of the situation and take immediate steps to save valuable lives.

Thanking you!

Yours sincerely,
Sunil Sharma

Sir,

Subject : Inaccurate account of a theft in my house by your newspaper

I was deeply pained to read the press report in your paper captioned ‘Thieves loot black money’ that appeared on the 11th of October edition. The news report filed by your correspondent is not only incorrect, but also malicious and far from the truth. There are various glaring anomalies in the report, that I.would like to bring to your kind notice.

The serious allegation of black money amounting to Rs. ten lakh is a travesty of the truth. The exact loss reported in the FIR No. 194 lodged with the police was Rs. 10,000 only, while valuables amounting to Rs. one lakh had been stolen. Moreover, being a service employee, I have been a regular Income Tax payee. There is therefore no question of my having access to black money as mentioned in the report.

Besides this, there are other anomalies, like making the case of an ordinary theft look like a dacoity. This is indeed sensationalising an incident which is highly erroneous and misleading.

That fateful night I was sleeping in the bedroom, on the first floor of my house when the burglars scaling the boundary wall broke open the window of my study to enter the house. They ransacked the study and drawing room, and decamped with some cash and valuables as stated above. I discovered the theft early next morning. There was no scuffle and gunshots as stated in your paper. The report is highly malevolent, with intent to harm my reputation and has caused me grievous mental agony. A paper of your repute ought to avoid such misleading and malicious reporting based on mere hearsay.

I would request you to kindly publish a correction, stating the above facts, so that the harm, inadvertently done by your paper, is set right.

Thanking you!

Yours faithfully,
Sharad Saxena

Sir,

Subject : Request for giving publicity to our play titled ‘Corruption’

I would like to inform, that St Josephs High School Dramatics Club, is staging a play titled ‘Corruption’, in Ravindralaya on the 10th of November at 6 PM. The play dwells on the evil of corruption and its effect on the common man. It vividly portrays the plight of the middle class youth, and their disillusionment with the society, plagued by this vice. The play also subtly conveys a social message, that would stir the conscience of the common man, and serve as a beacon of light to the youth.

It has been scripted by the renowned playwright Mr Muzaffar Ali, with screenplay and direction by the famous dramatist Mr Gulzar. The students of the club have put in tremendous hard work, for the last over one month in perfecting the play. We are sure that the general public would appreciate our effort, for it deals with issues which are very close to their heart.

To help us create social awareness of this evil, we would request you to kindly give wide publicity to the play, through your October newspaper in the events column. The tickets are nominally priced, so that it is within the reach of the common man. The proceeds of the play shall be donated to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

We look forward to your help, by giving good exposure to this maiden endeavour of our club. This will besides boosting our morale, also help in contributing to a noble cause.

Thanking you!

Yours truly,
Rajan Singh

Dear Sir,

Subject : Need for a play area for children in Shakti Nagar

I would like to draw the attention of the authorities, through the columns of your prestigious daily, for the need of a playing area for the children of Shakti Nagar colony, Lucknow.

The colony in ward No. IV has about two thousand residents, but unfortunately there is no playground for children. The nearest playfield is in Sharda Nagar, which is five kilometers away. The children are therefore forced to play on the streets. This besides obstructing the traffic also endangers their life.

A playing area in the colony would make the children happy and healthy. It would also help nurture and develop future sporting talent that the country desperately needs. A clean open space would be a boon for the residents, especially senior citizens for strolling in the morning and evening. It would keep them physically fit and healthy.

There is ample space in the colony for such a playfield. The authorities need to only clean up the garbage dumping yard, just opposite the petrol pump. This is a sore spot in the area. It would not only clean up the locality, but also meet a long standing demand of the residents of the area.

I therefore appeal through your daily to the concerned authorities to kindly take note of this serious problem, that besides endangering the lives of children, also poses a health hazard for the residents of the colony

Thanking you!

Yours faithfully,
Amit Sharma

Dear Sir,

Subject : Urgent need for a government hospital in Barabanki

This is to draw your kind attention, to the poor health care facilities available to the citizens of Barabanki district. The district has a population of 8 lakh and at present there is only one primary health centre. This too has a skeletal staff of doctors and paramedics which is highly inadequate to cater to the requirement of the entire district. There is therefore an urgent need for a government hospital in the district.

The district comprises of eight tehsils, spread over one hundred square kilometres. In case of an ailment, the poor villagers have to either go to the nearest government hospital in Lucknow, or be at the mercy of private nursing homes, which fleece them for ordinary ailments. The fees charged by them are exorbitant, while the facilities offered are quite elementary. Essential facilities like CT Scan and Ultrasound are non – existent. This often leads to complications at a later date for want of timely diagnosis.

Such abysmal poor health care facilities result in valuable lives being lost. A government hospital with these facilities would be able to cater to the health of the inhabitants of the town, and the surrounding villages. Besides providing basic health care amenities, it would also help in the economic development of the district and its poor peasants.

There is thus an urgent need for a government hospital in Barabanki district to safeguard the health of the people, and also help in the economic development of the area. I sincerely hope you will consider my request and instruct authorities to take immediate action in this regard, for which I shall be obliged.

Yours truly,
S.P Singh

Dear Sir,

Subject : Inadequate relief to victims of earthquake

In response to the call of the honourable Prime Minister, our school St Francis College had contributed Rs. 10 lakh, to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, for the earthquake victims of Gujarat. This had been sent to your office vide cheque number 9865, dated 10 March 2003, drawn on State Bank of India. Having contributed to the noble cause we felt, that the money would have provided some help, to our ill – fated brethren in Gujarat.

I was however shocked to see the plight of the people, when I visited Bhuj last week, on a personal visit. Even after three years since the calamity struck Bhuj, I found people living in cracked and damaged buildings. In Lalganj locality located 15 km to the south of Bhuj, I found rubble strewn all over the place. The narrow roads were encroached by the people, who are afraid to live in their damaged houses. There is acute scarcity of drinking water. The drains are chocked and in some localities sewage water flows on the road. The living conditions of the people are indeed deplorable.

I was informed by the local residents, that most development work was done in the affluent parts of the town. However, this place is yet to receive the attention of the administration.

I would request you to kindly draw the attention of the authorities concerned to the plight of people in Lalganj, Bhuj. They shall be courting another disaster in the form of an epidemic, unless immediate steps are not taken to rectify the situation.

I felt it my bounden duty to inform you of the state of affairs in Lalganj. I hope you will ensure, that these people do not suffer on account of administrative neglect. They should get their due share of relief, which the people of the country have so generously contributed.

Yours faithfully,
Riyan Singh

Dear Sir,

Subject : Spurious medicines being marketed by X Y Z Pharmaceuticals

I would like to draw your immediate attention to the misleading claims being made by XYZ Pharmaceuticals, about a drug which they claim to be effective in preventing avian flu, or other forms of influenza. They are marketing this drug in the name of ‘Xeon’, and have launched a massive campaign in the media, to promote the sale of this medicine.

I became a victim of their propaganda, and purchased this medicine last month, in the wake of the avian flu scare, that had gripped the city. To my horror, I found myself stricken with influenza, and had to seek immediate medical attention from Dr V K. Narayan, my family doctor. I learnt from him, that the claim made by the company is highly exaggerated. This is because presently there is no drug that can actually prevent avian flu. There could be thousands of other innocent people like me, who may have fallen victim to this spurious drug. Moreover it could lead to serious side effects, jeopardising the health of people.

I would request you to have the matter investigated, and restrain the company from marketing such spurious medicines by making false claims.

Yours sincerely,
