Dear Sir,

Subject : Problems faced by tourists visiting Lucknow

I wish to bring to your kind notice, the inconvenience caused to tourist visiting the historic city of Lucknow. Their problem begins from the moment they disembark at the railway station or the airport. There is no tourist information counter there to get information about hotels, transport and places of tourist interest in the city. They are left to the mercy of unscrupulous touts and guides, who fleece them, by taking them to shady hotels, which abound around the railway station.

In the absence of prepaid auto and taxi services, the auto rickshaws charge exorbitant fares. The rickshaw pullers cheat tourists, often creating unpleasant scenes. In places like the Bara and Chota Imambara, the unprofessional guides charge more than the normal rate and are often discourteous with the tourist, causing unpleasantness and ill will.

These incidents sully the fair reputation of the city, known for its courtesy and culture. It leaves a bad impression on the mind of the tourists. I would therefore request you to take immediate steps to redress the problem before it is too late. There is an urgent need for a tourist information counter at the railway station, and the airport, where complete information on hotels, tourist sites and road maps, are available. Special tourist buses should ply during fixed hours, in the morning and afternoon, for the benefit of passengers. Prepaid auto and taxi service should be operated at the railway station and the airport. There should be registered and trained guides with fixed remuneration, at the places of tourist interest.

These measures would attract good visitors to the city, which has good tourist potential. To augment tourist inflow an advertisement campaign in the print and the electronic media, could boost the economic development of the city. I hope you will consider the suggestions, so that tourists visiting the city have a pleasant experience.

Thanking You,

Yours truly,
Amit Sharma

My Dear Anil,

I am indeed very sorry for what happened yesterday. Believe me, I had no intention of hurting your feelings, when I snapped back at you during recess.

Actually I was feeling very upset, on being reprimanded by the class .teacher, for not completing my project work. While I was brooding over this, you had thumped my back, asking me to come to the school canteen. In my disturbed state of mind, I snapped back at you, feeling angry over your insensitivity. I later realised that your offer was well intentioned, so as to draw me out of my misery.

You had acted like a true friend, but I had misunderstood your intent. It has been years since we have known each other and I would not like this small incidence to come in the way of our friendship.

Please do forgive me for this lapse and join me for a small party in the canteen today. This would give me tremendous joy and strengthen our friendship.

Your friend,
S. Sharma

Dear Sir,

Subject : Your complaint on the quality of linen supplied

We are in receipt of your letter ref. TH/123 dated. 30 June 2013, drawing our attention to the quality of linen supplied to you last month. Our Quality Control department has examined the above consignment returned by you, specially taking note of your complaint, regarding the colour and coarseness of material.

We agree that the quality of linen supplied, is not in absolute conformity to the sample enclosed with the order. There has obviously been some mistake, in dispatching the same. However, the colour of the linen is the same as we have been supplying to you over the years. The stain on some pieces could have been on account of the consignment getting wet, while in transit.

We thank you for drawing our attention to this lapse, which we sincerely regret. I have personally taken up the matter with the concerned staff, and have instructed them to send fresh stocks, conforming to your specifications. In order to avoid damage in transit, we shall be packing the consignment in plastic sheets, rather than gunny bags. The consignment shall be sent tomorrow, and would reach you in about a week’s time.

I apologise once again for the above lapse, and the inconvenience it may have caused you, I would like to assure you, that we shall take remedial measures to ensure that it does not happen in future. We greatly value your patronage, and would look forward to a long and fruitful association.

Yours truly,

Dear Sir,

Subject : Theft in Nehru Apartment

I would like to draw your kind attention to a theft that took place in my neighbouring flat number 123 Nehru Apartments, on the intervening night of 10th /11th October. The owner of the flat Mr R.N. Gupta, a close friend of mine had gone to Delhi to attend a wedding with his family, the previous night. In the morning when I came out of my flat for my usual morning walk, I found the main door of his flat ajar with a broken lock flung on the floor. Fearing the worst, I informed the local police station of the incident, and also my friend at Delhi. The local police took an hour’s time to come to the scene. By that time a sizeable crowd had gathered in front of the flat.

Despite my insistence, the inspector Mr. S.K. Sharma, was unable to summon the dog squad, that could have given some vital clues for catching the culprit. However nothing much was done, except for waiting for the family to return and record their statements. Mr. Gupta informed that the valuables amounting to rupees two lakhs have been stolen. The pace at which the investigation is in progress, there is no hope of catching the thief.

It is indeed very surprising to note, that despite the tremendous advances made in criminology, our police is still adopting ancient methods of investigation. There is also no preventive measure to tackle this menace that has become a frequent occurrence. I would therefore request you to kindly have this theft investigated. Appropriate measures must also be taken to ensure the safety of the inhabitants of these apartments.

Yours truly,

Dear Sir,

Subject : No progress made against my FIR Number GN 104

I would like to draw your kind attention to the extremely tardy progress made by the Nehru Nagar police station, regarding my FIR Number GN 104, dated 11 October 1991. This FIR was regarding a theft which took place in my house on the intervening night of 10th/11th October 1991.1 had gone to Delhi to attend a wedding with my family, the previous night. The next day I received a phone call from my friend Mr S. P. Saigal, informing me about the theft. I returned to learn that the local police took an hour’s time to come to the scene. During this time a sizeable crowd had gathered in front of my house.

Despite the insistence of my friend, the inspector Mr S.K. Sharma was unable to summon the dog squad, which could have given some vital clues, for catching the culprit. However nothing much was done, except for waiting for me to return and record my statement. The thieves decamped with cash amounting to ₹ 10,000, besides valuables amounting to two lakh rupees. It is now over a week but nothing substantial has been done, like questioning the people whom I suspect, or taking the fingerprints. The pace of investigation is so slow, that there no hope of catching the thieves.

It is indeed very surprising to note, that despite the tremendous advances made in criminology, our police is still adopting primitive methods of investigation. There is no preventive measure to tackle the menace, which has become a frequent occurrence in our colony. There is no police patrolling and rounding up suspicious character, who hang around the dhabas which abound in the residential colony.

I would request you to kindly instruct the concerned officer to expedite the investigation; so that the culprit is brought to book, for which I shall be obliged.
Thanking you!

Yours truly,
Sharad Singh

Dear Sir,

Subject : Poor facilities in Your hotel

I had come on a business trip to Mumbai and had checked in your hotel on 3rd April 1989 in room no. 106. I found the overall service of the hotel quite poor, which belied your claim of offering three star facilities. I had brought this to your notice on a number of occasions, during my one-week long stay in your hotel, but there was hardly any improvement.

The room given to me was humid with poor ventilation. The sheets were dirty and quite shabby. When I requested room service to change them, they were brusque in telling me that the sheets had been changed in the morning. I had to remind them daily to change the sheets, which poorly reflects the quality of housekeeping. The room service was atrocious and required several reminders before what was ordered finally arrived.

The quality of food was not in keeping with the star status, though it was priced accordingly. On a few occasions I had to return the food, for it did not seem fit to eat. The staff at the reception counter were insensitive to the needs of a guest. I had to remind the operator a number of times, before I could get my number. Keeping in view the quality of service offered, the tariff of ₹ 2,500 per day, for a single room was indeed very unreasonable.

I would request you to kindly investigate the above shortcomings, so that guests are not put through the ordeal which I had to face. There is an immediate need to improve the housekeeping, catering and room service in the hotel. Besides this the staff needs to be trained on behaviour and etiquette. These measures will improve the goodwill of your hotel and justify your claim of a three star hotel, offering five star amenities.

Yours truly,
S. Sharma

Dear Sir,

Subject : Precarious condition of historical monument at Lucknow

I would like to draw your attention to the precarious condition of ‘The Residency’ at Lucknow. It is an important heritage site, which bears testimony to our freedom struggle.

This monument on the banks of the River Gomti is known for the significant role it played during the first war of Independence against the British rule. Unfortunately, it is being slowly but surely eroded. In the absence of proper security arrangements, people inscribe their names and messages on the walls. This not only disfigures, but also endangers the monument.

The lush green lawns are littered with polythene bags and eatables, giving the place an unpleasant and dirty look. The absence of proper drinking water in the complex makes the visit antagonizing. This is further compounded by numerous self designated guides, who thrust themselves on the hapless tourists, often fleecing them.

I would therefore request you to take immediate steps to preserve this national heritage, by improving security arrangements. The civic authorities should also be instructed to make proper arrangements for drinking water in the complex. To facilitate the tourists registered guides should only be allowed to operate in the complex.

These measures would go a long way in safeguarding the important monument, and also make it memorable for the tourists.

Yours sincerely,
Sudhanshu Sharma

Dear Sir,

Subject : Frequent traffic jams on the main thoroughfares of Lucknow

I would like to draw your kind attention to the frequent traffic jams on the main thoroughfares of Lucknow. The increase in the population of the city, and the corresponding multiplying of vehicles has aggravated the problem.

The problem becomes very serious during peak office hours in the morning and evening, i.e., 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. and 5 P.M. to 6 P.M., respectively. This is the time when people come to office and return home. Traffic snarls are serious in Charbagh, Vidhan Sabha Marg and Ashok Marg right up to Nishatganj. These routes also become jammed in the afternoon from 1 P.M. to 2 P.M. as school buses and vans ferry school going children home.

To surmount the problem, I would suggest that commercial vehicles including intercity buses should not be allowed on these routes during the above peak hours. Slow moving transport like thelas, tongas should also be restricted for they hamper traffic movement on the bridges.

The above measures if adopted would considerably decongest the traffic on these routes. Besides reducing traffic jams it would also make life easy for the people of Lucknow.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,
Siddhant Singh

Subject : Improving the quality of programmes telecast

I am an old patron of Doordarshan and enjoy viewing the Rangoli and other serials like Jalsa and Udaan. However of late I find the quality of some programmes like ‘Kabhi Saas Kabhi Baku’, ‘Samachar’ and the Regional News uninteresting and often boring.

The serial Kabhi Saas Kabhi Bahu has now dragged on for over five years. The story line has been too stretched to now make it boring. While reading the news the newsreaders lack emotion, making even ‘breaking news’ appear to be ordinary. As for the Regional News the coverage is primarily political, with social and cultural news being sidelined. To cite an instance, the marriage of 101 couples by a social organisation in Lucknow last month, did not find a place in the regional news telecast.

In order to keep the interest of the viewers alive, I would suggest that the number of episodes of a serial be time bound, so that it does not lose focus. Moreover serials on social issues like ‘evil of child marriage’, ‘family planning’ and ‘female infanticide’ should be telecast. The ‘Samachar’ should be made more interesting, by showing the news and also making the viewer experience it. As regards the ‘Regional News’ it should be more broad based, and cover regional issues in the true sense.

I hope you will give due thought to my suggestions and take steps to retain the interest of loyal viewers like me.

Yours faithfully,
Vaibhav Singh
