A Baker From Goa Summary of the Lesson

Goa is very much influenced by the Portuguese. Their traditional work can be still seen there. The Portuguese are famous for preparing the loaves of bread. We can come across the makers of bread in Goa. The furnaces baking the bread still exist there.

It is a traditional family work and these bakers are known as pader in Goa. The writer tells about his childhood days in Goa when the baker used to be their friend.

He used to visit their house twice a day. In the morning his jingling sound of the bamboo woke them from sleep. They all ran to meet him. The loaves were purchased by the maidservant of the house. But they always ran to get bread bangles. Sometimes the baker had special sweet bread.

His entry created the ‘jhang-jhang’ sound from the bamboo. Through one hand the baker supported the basket on his head and the other hand banged the bamboo on the ground. After greeting the lady of the house by saying ‘Good morning’, the baker would place his basket. He had loaves for the elders’ and the bangles for the children. There used to come a typical fragrance from the loaves.

The villagers were much fond of the sweet bread known as ‘boll The marriage gifts were meaningless without it. So the bakers’ furnace in the village was the most essential thing.

The lady of the house prepared sandwiches on the occasion of her daughter’s engagement. Cakes and lbolinhas’ formed important items on various occasions like Christmas and other festivals.

In those days the bread-seller wore a particular dress known as ‘Kabai’. It was a single piece long frock up to the knees. Even today they can be seen wearing a half pant that reaches just below the knees. People usually comment that he is dressed like ‘a Pader’.

The baker would collect his bill at the end of the month.

They recorded their accounts on the wall in pencil. Baking was a profitable profession in old days. The baker and his family never starved and they looked happy and prosperous.

Coorg Summary of the Lesson

Coorg is situated midway between Mysore and the coastal town of Mangalore (now Mangaluru). It is a heaven on earth carried gently by the air with great efforts from the kingdom of God. Here one can find the martial men who have shown their valour in the war.

It is a home of evergreen forests, spices, coffee, wild animals and other kinds of shrubs. During the monsoon, it rains heavily and visitors fail to enjoy the perfect bliss of the earth. From September to March the weather is all embracing and the air breathes of invigorating coffee.

In prime comers one can see coffee estates and colonial bungalows. Coorg or Kodagu is the smallest district of Karnataka. Its people are possibly of Greek or Arabic descent. As the story goes on that a part of Alexander’s army moved south along the coast and settled here since the return became impossible.

So these people married the locals and adopted their rites. Even today we can see some differences from the Hindu mainstream in that place. There is another theory of Arab origin that the Kodagus wear black coat with an embroidered waist belt known as kuppia, it resembles the kuffia worn by the Arabs and the Kurds.

Coorgi homes are very hospitable. There are so many tales of valour related to their sons and fathers. The Coorg Regiment is famous in the Indian Army. General Cariappa, the first Chief of Indian Army was a Coorgi. Only the Kodagus are the people in India who are permitted to carry firearms without a licence. They are famous for showing utmost bravery before the enemy.

There flows the Kaveri river from the hills and forests of Coorg. Fish like Mahaseer and kingfishers etc. are abundant in these waters. Other creatures like squirrels, langurs and elephants enjoy the splash and ripple effect in the clear water.

The elephants can be seen bathing and their mahouts scrub them. The games like rafting, canoeing, rappelling, rock climbing, mountain biking and walking trails are favourite with the trekkers.

There one can enjoy the birds, bees, butterflies, Macqus, Malabar squirrels, langurs and slender loris are there to company us. The birds sit on the trees and keep a watchful eyes on the visitors.

The ride on the elephants is very joyous. One can enjoy a climb on the Brahmagiri hills. It provides a clear worth seeing view of Coorg. There one can see the rope bridge which leads to the sixty-four-acre island of Nisargadhama. Walking over this rope-bridge creates trembling sensations in, the body.

There one can come across India’s largest Tibetan colony. It is run by the Buddhist monks. It is near Bylakuppe. It is inhabited robes by monks who wear red, ochre and yellow robes. A number of visitors visit to discover the heart and soul of India in Coorg. One can reach there by reaching Madikeri.

It is the district headquarter. The misty hills, lush forests and coffee plantation will cast a spell on us. From Bangalore (now Bengaluru), Mysore and Mangalore one can reach Coorg by air and rail.

Mijbil the Otter Summary of the Lesson

Gavin Maxwell lives in a cottage in Camusfeama in the West Highlands in Scotland. He had a pet dog Jonnie.

When Jonnie died, he was too sad to think of keeping a dog again. But life without a pet was lonely. So he decided to have another pet. He didn’t want to have a dog. He thought that he would have an otter instead of a dog. He shared this idea with his friend who immediately supported him and suggested to get one in the Tigris marshes.

The author received a sack from two Arabs at his residence in southern Iraq. In the sack there was an otter.

It was a small creature like a small dragon. It was covered with mud from head to tail. The author named it ‘Mijbil’. For the first twenty-four hours it was neither hostile nor friendly. He was simply aloof and indifferent.

On the first night it slept on the floor but the second night it slept on the author’s bed. Mijbil started taking interest in its surroundings. When Mijbil was taken to the bathroom, he enjoyed his bath. The author knew that the otters are fond of water.

Now Mijbil used to go to the water, opened the tap himself and enjoyed his bath. Soon it became habitual of being called as ‘Mij’. It spent most of its time in playing with a rubber ball and marbles were his favourite toys for pastime.

The days passed peacefully at Basra. The author had to come back. He dreaded the prospect of transporting Mij to England and to Camusfeama. He had to book a flight in another airline as the British Airline would not fly animals to London.

The airline advised that Mij should be packed in a box. The author had a box made, put Mij into it an hour before he started for the airport so that Mij would become accustomed to it and went for a meal. When he returned there was silence in the box.

He noticed blood from the airholes. He opened it and the blood-spattered. Mij whimpered and caught his leg. There was no time so the author put it back in the box and hurried for the airport.

In the plane, one of the air hostesses cooperated with the author and advised him to keep the pet on his knee.

But soon there was chaos in the plane. Otter disappeared at high speed down the aircraft. There were squawks and shrieks all around. The author tried to look for him. The air hostess helped him in the search. Otter was back with the author.

The author remained in London for nearly a month. Mij used to play for hours with different toys. The author used to take otter out for exercise and walk. Both walked through the streets. In London, people did not recognise an otter. They guessed what kind of animal it was. The author faced a stream of questions filled with guesses.

Wanda Petronski was a young Polish girl who went to school with other American children. She was different in many ways from other children. That day Wanda was not in her seat. She usually sat in the seat next to the last seat in the last row in Room thirteen where most of the boys made noises.

She rarely said anything. Wanda came from Boggins Heights. Her feet were usually caked with dry mud. There were other girls named Peggy and Maddie. Most often both these girls waited for Wanda Petronski to have fun with her.

Wanda did not have any friend but a lot of friends talked to her. She came to school alone and went home alone. She always wore a faded-blue dress that did not often fit her properly. Peggy asked Wanda courteously how many dresses she possessed.

Wanda replied that she had a hundred all lined up in the closet. All were surprised at her remark. About shoes she replied that she had sixty pairs of all colours. Cries of politeness came from the students.

Peggy was the closest friend of Wanda. She enjoyed fun with her but she always protected small children from bullies. She would cry for hours on seeing an animal mistreated. If anybody asked about her protection for Wanda as cruelty, she would feel surprised. But why did Wanda say she had a hundred dresses? She must have told the truth, Peggy thought. Other girls had never troubled her very much.

On the other hand, Maddie was a poor girl. She usually wore the old clothes of others. She thanked herself for not living in Boggins Heights or for having a funny name. But the question of asking dresses, hats and other items was troubling her.

Often Peggy asked such questions but Maddie always felt ashamed. In reality this game about dresses was invented by Peggy. It was Maddie’s desire that Peggy would stop teasing Wanda Petronski.

Today Maddie was busy with her arithmetic problems. She decided to write a note to Peggy on the point that they would stop asking Wanda how many dresses she possessed. She started writing but suddenly she stopped. She viewed a new target for Peggy and other girls. She would tell others that it was Peggy5s old dress and her (Maddie’s) mother had mended it so that none could recognise it.

She also thought that she would decide not to make fun of Wanda. With these words, Peggy tore up the note. Peggy also knew that Wanda hardly said anything to others.

Maddie was lost in Wanda about her hundred dresses. Then the drawing and colour contest came to her mind. For the girls the contest was to design dresses. The boys were to design motor boats. Maddie was hopeful that Peggy would win because she was good at designing.

She could copy a picture from a magazine quite alike. Next day it was drizzling. So without waiting for Wanda, they hurried to school for the result.

The moment they entered the room, they were amazed to see drawings all over the room. They were in dazzling colours of lavish designs. These must have been hundred and all were lined up. Everybody stopped and praised this grand work.

In no time Miss Mason announced the winners.

Miss Mason announced Jack Beggles from the boys. About girls, she told that there were just one or two sketches submitted by most girls. But there was a single girl in Room thirteen, who had drawn one hundred different designs. All should be proud of her.

The judges had viewed that each drawing was worthy of the prize. Wanda Petronski was the winner. She had been absent for some days and applauses were due for her. All students were happy and burst into applause. Labour gives result.

The writer thinks that writing in a diary is a strange experience. She thinks that none will take an interest in the ideas of a thirteen-year-old school girl. Leaving aside everything, she thought of writing. At that time the writer was feeling some depression and despair.

She thought of the saying—‘Paper has more patience than people’. Then she started writing but she was in need of a real friend who could be no more than a diary.

Anne says that her father was the most adorable person. At the age of thirty-six, he married Anne’s mother Edith. In 1929 her sister Margot was born. Then she was born on 12th June 1929 and they lived in Germany. In 1933, her father emigrated to Holland.

She along with Margot went to Aachen to stay with the grandmother. By December both the sisters went to Holland. There Anne was put down on the table as a birthday present for Margot. There she started at the Montessori nursery school.

When she was in the sixth grade, Mrs. Kuperus was her headmistress. At the end of the year, there was a farewell function. The separation from the headmistress was full of tears.

Anne loved her grandmother very much. She fell ill in the summer of 1941. She had an operation but she died in January 1942. Her death was all the more troublesome. At Anne’s birthday celebrations, a separate candle was lit for the grandmother.

In her diary, Anne wrote that all the four members were doing well. She was much dedicated to her diary. This event was written by Anne on 20th June 1942 on Saturday. In her diary, Anne makes a mention of Kitty. Referring to her she writes that the complete class is nervous about their going to the next form.

Some of the students have made bets and staked all their savings. Anne thinks she will ‘pass’ but she is not sure due to Maths. All have been telling each other not to lose heart.

There are nine teachers. Mr Keesing teaches maths. He remains annoyed with Anne because of her talkative nature. So he has given her some extra work to write an essay on “A chatterbox.” After the homework, Anne started thinking on the essay.

An idea flashed in her mind. She wrote that talking was a student’s trait and she would do her best to control it. But she won’t be able to cure herself of her habit since her mother was also talkative. So moving from the inherited traits couldn’t be done.

Hearing her argument, Mr. Keesing had a good laugh. Then the teacher gave her another essay “An Incorrigible Chatterbox”. Thus passed two lessons. During the third lesson, he asked her to write on ‘Quack, Quack, Quack, Said Mistress Chatterbox”.

It was a sort of punishment for Anne for talking in class. At this topic, the whole class roared. Anne too laughed. Though Anne was tired of this essay. In a way the teacher was playing a joke on her but in other words it was a joke on him. So she wrote this essay like a poem.

Anne read the poem in the class. It stated that there was a mother duck and a father swan with three baby ducklings. The ducklings were bitten to death by the father since they quacked too much. It was Anne’s good luck that the teacher took it the right way.

The teacher read the poem, gave his own comments. After that Anne was allowed to talk and no extra work was given. Since then Mr. Keesing too started making jokes.

Nelson Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom Summary of the Lesson

This extract has been taken from the autobiography of Nelson Mandela, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’. In this small passage, Mandela speaks about a historic occasion, “the inauguration.”

It was 10th May when a huge gathering of international leaders had assembled in Pretoria to mark the end of white supremacy. It was the pleasant installation of first democratic non-racial government of South Africa.

Mr de Klerk and Mr Thabo Mbeki were sworn is as second and first deputy presidents respectively. After that Nelson Mandela pledged to obey the Constitution. He dedicated himself to the well-being of his people.

The swearing ceremony was followed by a spectacular show by jets, defence and police force. In the end-V- shaped Impala jets left a smoke trail of the black, red, green, blue and gold of the new South Africa flag.

On this occasion, Mandela recalls how a system of racial domination was created against the dark-skinned people in their own land. He calls it the most inhumane system. He is glad to overturn the system.

He promised for a system where the recognition would be given to the rights and freedom of all people regardless of the colour of their skin. He remembers all the leaders who sacrificed their lives to end the era of oppression. He regrets that they are not alive to see what their sacrifice had achieved.

He writes that the era of oppression and brutality created a deep and lasting wound in his country but at the same time this era created men of extraordinary courage and wisdom. Such people are the greatest wealth of the country.

He thanked those heroes who taught him that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

No one is born to hate others. If we can learn to hate, we can learn to love.also. This is what we should do. We should learn to love.

Mandela talks about twin obligations – an obligation to his family, to his parents, to his wife and children; and he has an obligation to his people, his community, his country. He emphasises that in a civil society each one of us should fulfil these two obligations.

He regrets that during the era of oppression no one in South Africa could fulfil, these obligations. But now he promises that each one of the citizens would get an environment where he would fulfil the twin obligations. He desired for the freedom of his people to live with dignity, self-respect and without any fear.

‘His First flight’ is an interesting story of a young seagull who was afraid of flying. He did not have confidence. He thought that his wings were not strong enough to support him. All the family members had already left him. They tried to encourage him to fly but failed. He was left alone on the ledge. There was a wide chasm between him and his parents.

He tried to reach his parents and took a little run also but the sight of the widespread green sea frightened him apd he ran back into his nest. His brothers and sister had already learned the art of flight.

But the young seagull could not muster the courage to take that plunge which appeared to him so difficult. His parents came around calling to him, shrilly upbraiding him, threatening to let him starve. But the young seagull did not move.

He was alone for 24 hours and ate nothing. He was hungry. He wanted to reach his parents who were sitting opposite to him but without flying. There was a wide gap between the two rocks. There was no possibility of reaching there without flying. He saw his brothers and sister who were flying and catching the fish. They taunted him for his co-wordiness. He wanted to follow them. but the fear stopped him.

He was extremely hungry. He saw his family taking rest on the rock opposite to him. He tried to attract their attention by pretending to be sleeping. But nobody noticed him. His mother was looking at him. The young seagull cried begging her to bring him some food. But she did not respond.

After some time, his mother picked up a piece of fish and flew across him. He was excited on seeing his mother picking up a piece of fish and flying across him. He was excited on seeing his mother coming towards him. He uttered a joyful cry.

He leaned out eagerly, tapping the rock with his feet. But when she was just opposite to him, she halted. The young seagull was surprised. The sight of fish in her beak maddened him. He could not control himself and dived at the fish. The mother flew over him.

He fell downwards with a loud scream. But his wings opened up automatically. He cried and to save himself he flapped his wings. Now he felt as if he was soaring in the sky. He was not falling headlong now. He flapped his wings once again and soared upwards.

He gave a joyous scream now. He was joined by his family in his first flight.

He was near the sea now. He saw a vast green sea beneath him. His parents and other family members landed on the sea. They called the young seagull also. He dropped his legs to stand on the sea. His legs sank into it. He screamed with fright and attempted to rise. But he was too weak and exhausted to rise.

His feet sank into the sea water and then his body touched it. He sank no further. Now he was floating happily. His family praised him for his efforts and offered him scrapped dog-fish. He had made his first flight successfully.
