Question 2.
Have you ever seen a watchdog which behaves exactly opposite to the above given qualities? Would you like to choose a fearful dog or a friendly dog? Why?
Answer:
Yes, I have seen a watchdog which behaves exactly opposite to Attila. Attila showed love of humanity and gentle behaviour towards all the people. But I have seen a lot of dogs which do not show such type of love and humanity towards all the poeple. They just don’t mix up with the people easily. They remain loyal to their masters.
I would like to choose a friendly dog. But the dog must be attentive in their duty and loyal to their masters.

I. Understanding the Story
A. Answer the following questions briefly:

Question 1.
Why did the family buy Attila?
Answer:
The family bought Attila because there was a series of house breakings and thefts in the neighbourhood. The family members had more trust in a dog than in the police. Therefore, they decided to buy a dog which could protect their house from theft.

Question 2.
What was Attila’s attitude towards strangers?
Answer:
Attila was very friendly and warm towards strangers.

Question 3.
What was Attila’s reaction when he saw Ranga stealing the valuables? How far was it in accordance with Ranga’s expectations?
Answer:
When Attila saw Ranga stealing the valuables, to his utter surprise he didn’t bark Ranga. In fact he licked Ranga’s hands and rolled his eyes. But Ranga’s expectation with Attila was different. He expected Attila to bark at him and that would be the end of his theft.

Question 4.
Why was Ranga fed up with Attila?
Answer:
Ranga was fed up with Attila because Attila was not at all willing to leave him. In fact he glued his eyes on Ranga.

Question 5.
How did the family members react to Attila’s disappearance?
Answer:
The family members were happy with Attila’s disappearance. The father even told that he may thank the thief for taking Attila away.

Question 6.
Why did Attila run after Ranga? What did others conclude from his chase?
Answer:
Attila ran after Ranga because he wanted to enjoy his company. When Ranga was running, he thought that Attila was running after him. Others concluded that Attila was chasing the thief Ranga.

B. The family had high expectations from Attila but he disappointed them every time by acting differently. Fill in the chart given below highlighting the difference between what was expected of Attila and what he actually did. The first one has been done for you.

A. Is Attila really a hero? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer:
The answer can be “yes’ or ‘no’ both.
The thief was caught due to Attila only. Had Attila not followed him when he tried to run away, the family members would have never got the jewels back. In the end he was able to bring back the lost treasure.
If we say no, then he never fulfilled any duties of a dog. Eveiybody had a free access to their home. Even when the thief was rummaging through almirahs and trunks. Attila just stood there watching everything. He started following the thief in the hope of getting freedom.

B. All said and done. Attila was a bad watchdog. Do you agree?
Answer:
Yes, I agree with the statement. He was definitely a bad watchdog. He never fulfilled any duties of a dog. Everybody had a free access to their home. Even when the thief was rummaging through almirahs and trunks. Attila just stood there watching everything. He started following the thief in the hope of getting freedom.

III. Life Skills

As the youngest son, who always favoured Attila. What would you do to help the family come out of the shock? (Plan a strategy to bring back Attila and the jewellery stolen).
Answer:
Attila was always my favourite. I never did let him go even when my whole family was against him. And when he was gone, everyone was happy. But now when the truth is out, I am planning to bring Attila back. Attila will surely gain the same place in everybody’s heart. I think that something is lacking in his training. I plan to take him to trainer also so that Attila fulfils his duty as a watchdog.

We should judge people by what they actually are and not by what they help to achieve.’ Discuss with reference to Attila.
Answer:
It is said that ‘Appearances are often deceptive’. Same is true in case of Attila also. Although he was a watchdog and his duty was to keep strangers away from the house, he became friendly with everyone. He didn’t even bark at the thief and allowed him to decamp with the valuables.

V. Writing Skills

A. Imagine yourself to be a newspaper reporter who witnessed Attila blocking the way of Ranga and helping the police catch the thief. Write a newspaper report describing the brave act of Attila.

12 April, 20XX — Pune — Today, a brave dog helped nab a seasoned offender and thief, ‘Ranga’ who was absconding after committing a string of robberies in posh neighbourhood. It is said that the dog ‘Attila’ was following the thief for many days. Today, as the owner of the dog, Attila, shouted for him, the thief got nervous and tried to run away from the spot. He was chased by the dog Attila and later overpowered by the crowd who smelled a rat. Some pieces of stolen jewellery were also in thiefs pocket. The police has taken him into custody and is looking into the matter.

B. Imagine yourself to be Attila. Write a letter to one of your friends showing your displeasure over your friend Ranga’s imprisonment.

How was Attila different from other dogs?
Answer:
Attila was a very different dog as compared to others. He wras not very strong and aggressive like other dogs. He never barked at strangers. He received them very warmly, friendly and gently. He never scared them. Once the thief, Ranga entered into the house, he didn’t even bark at him and allowed him to go with all the valuables and money. He also went along with him and was enjoying his company. Hence, unlike other dogs he didn’t protect the house and not even scare the strangers.

Attila Summary in English

Once there was a family that planned to keep a watchdog because many thefts had taken place in their neighbourhood. They bought a pet dog and named it Attila. At that time, it was very small just a puppy. When it grew up, it became very friendly to the strangers. It used to receive all vendors, collectors, postmen, etc. normally and never barked on them. When the family members saw this they decided to lock Attila’ in a room as it was very quiet and calm dog. One day a thief called Ranga entered their house and took away all the valuables. When he was about to leave the house, Attila came in front of him. Ranga was very scared. He thought that he would be caught now. But to his astonishment, Attila didn’t bark at him. Ranga left the house with all the stolen valuables. As he went out he found that Attila was following him.

Attila always wanted to wander freely in streets. He liked Ranga very much and didn’t want to leave him even for a single moment but Ranga was very irritated with the dog. He did not like the dog following him. He tried his best to make Attila leave him but all his efforts were in vain. On the other hand, the family was very happy that Attila had left the house no matter how much valuables had gone. After one week when the family’s elder son was walking in the city, he saw Attila following Ranga. He shouted at Attila but Ranga thought as if he were shouting at him and started running. As Ranga ran, Attila also started running after him as he wanted to stay with Ranga.

अटीला गलियों में घूमने का बहुत शौकीन था । उसे रंगा के साथ बहुत अच्छा लग रहा था और वह उसे बिल्कुल भी छोड़ना नहीं चाहता था। लेकिन रंगा उस कुत्ते से काफी नाराज़ हो गया था। उसके साथ कुत्ते का आना उसे अच्छा नहीं लग रहा था। उसने अटीला से बचने की बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन उसके सारे प्रयत्न बेकार साबित हुए। दूसरी ओर पूरा परिवार बहुत खुश था कि अटीला ने घर छोड़ दिया था और इसका कोई महत्व नहीं था कि कितनी कीमती वस्तुएँ गायब हो गयी थीं। एक सप्ताह के बाद उस परिवार का बड़ा लड़का जब बाहर टहल रहा था, तो उसने अटीला को रंगा के पीछे जाते देखा। उसने अटीला को आवाज़ लगाई तो रंगा को लगा कि वह उसे आवाज़ दे रहा है और वह तेजी से भागने लगा।

जब रंगा भागने लगा तो अटीला भी उसके साथ भागने लगा क्योंकि वह रंगा के साथ रहना चाहता था। अटीला ने भागकर रंगा का रास्ता रोक लिया और एक गहना गिर गया। रंगा उसके ऊपर गिर गया। जब वह गिर गया तो उसके हाथ से एक गहना गिर गया। गहने को देखकर उस लड़के ने उसे पहचान लिया कि ये तो वही गहना है, जो उसके घर से चुराया गया था इससे रंगा ही चोर साबित हुआ। पुलिस ने वहाँ जाकर रंगा को पकड़ लिया। सभी लोग अटीला की बहादुरी की प्रशंसा कर रहे थे। लेकिन किसी को सच्चाई का पता नहीं था । लेखक का कहना है यह सही था कि अटीला बोल नहीं सकता था, अन्यथा वह सत्य का बखान कर देता ।
