Summary of the Story

There was an Annual Sports Competition in Nina’s school. Nina was to take part in the 100 m race. Her best friend Medha was a good runner. The sports competition was going to be special because the Principal would award a trophy to the best student of the school.

On the day of the competition everyone in the school seemed excited. The chief guest had already arrived. The parents had also come. Nina and Medha were waiting for the race which was to be started after the chief guest’s speech. Finally the race started, Nina gradually picked speed. She was ahead of all the participants. Medha was just behind her. Suddenly Medha sprained her ankle and fell down on the ground. Nina thought for a second and turned back to help her friend. Thus, another girl won the first position. But Nina was not bothered about the prize. She was confident that she had done right thing.

At the time of prize distribution Nina was awarded the ‘Best Student Trophy’. When asked by the chief guest why she stopped and lost her chance to win the first prize, she replied that she could win the prize the next year also but she must help someone in difficult time.

Krishna and Sudama

Summary of the Story

Krishna and Sudama were fast friends at the gurukul. When they grew up, Krishna became the King of Dwarka while Sudama remained poor. As he had a big family, he found it difficult to manage food for all the members. One day Sudama’s wife requested him to go to Krishna, his childhood friend, to get some help from him. In the beginning Sudama was unwilling but finally he decided to go to Krishna. He took a little puffed rice in a small bundle and started the journey.

After walking for many days, Sudama reached Dwarka. He was a little but nervous to see Krishna’s grand palace and even decided to turn back. But somehow he gathered courage and sent a message to Krishna. Krishna immediately came out and took Sudama inside the palace. He and his wife, Rukmini, welcomed his warmly.

Sudama stayed with Krishna for a long time but could not ask for any help. Finally, he left Dwarka. When he reached his village, he was surprised to see a beautiful house at the site of his hut. He took no time to understand that it was Krishna who did the miracle.

The Birthday Kitten

Summary of the Story

It was Peter’s birthday and his aunt Sally presented him a new pair of socks. Peter wasn’t at all happy to get such a present. In fact, he wanted to have a big book of adventure stories. Peter went to school as usual and enjoyed the clappings made by his classmates. On the way home he saw a tiny kitten under a hedge. Being a kind-hearted boy, he picked up the kitten and brought it to home. Aunt Sally was not pleased to see it. She told Peter to keep it outside in the shed. Peter obeyed his aunt. He took good care of the kitten.

There held a pet show in Peter’s school. All the students brought their pets. Peter too brought his kitten which looked so healthy and beautiful. The school teacher looked hard at every animal and bird and became happy to find all of them well cared for. But when she came to Peter’s kitten, she really couldn’t help picking it up to stroke it.

Finally, Peter’s kitten won the prize because he (Peter) looked after her well. The teacher gave Peter a prize which was the big book of adventure stories. Thus, Peter got what he wished for.
