The author-Kocheril Raman Narayanan K.R. Narayanan (1921-2005) the tenth president of India, was the first dalit to hold this august office. He was a scholar, thinker, social reformer, educationalist and a statesman. His contributions are so great and unforgettable that they are remembered long by the masses. A man of vast experience, he commanded national and international prominence, prestige and dignity.
He worked as London correspondent of the social welfare weakly published by K.M. Munshi. He had also taught at Delhi School of Economics and served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Delhi. He also served as ambassador to Japan, the United Kingdom, Thailand, United States of America.

Today, there is a rivalry between print media and electronic media. How ever, the supremacy of the print media will continue in the next millennium also. It is because there is a close relationship between human beings and printed word. Word is a very inspiring instrument. Printing Press has been supposed to be the greatest invention of the last two millennia.
It has been found recently that in America the tendency of the circulation of newspapers has gone down but in India, the situation is just reverse. Here, newspapers and periodicals have exploded. Newspapers have played a significant role in the freedom movement as well as in the development of India.
Mathew conducted a movement for the freedom of the press and he got victory, too. Today his paper has one of the largest circulations in India.
The author depreciates the role of media because, at times, it becomes more professional. He says that while he was inaugurating Khajuraho Festival, a fashion-show a lot but they did not give the same importance to the Khajuraho Festival.

अनुवाद-मुझे भारतीय समाचार सभा की डायमण्ड जुबिली समारोह का उद्घाटन करने में प्रसन्नता हो रही है। मैंने सोचा कि यह अवसर इतना महत्त्वपूर्ण है कि यह मेरे कुछ शब्दों के बिना नहीं जाना चाहिए । यद्यपि उनका (मेरे शब्दों का) कोई विशेष महत्त्व होने वाला नहीं है।

अनुवाद-समाचार पत्र सोसायटी का जन्म अखबारी कागज के लिए लड़ाई की अत्यावश्यकता के कारण हुआ था। परन्तु यह भारत में समाचार पत्रों की स्वतंत्रता की हिमायती बन गई । भारतीय सनाचार पत्रों का आरम्भ व प्रगति बहुत कीर्तिमान रही है। मुझे याद आता है कि भारतीय नवजागरण के जन्मदाता राजा राममोहन राय ने एक बार कहा था, “समाचार पत्र बुद्धि का वाहन है।” आज वह जनसाधारण में बुद्धि का प्रसारण करता है। ‘बुद्धि’ के गुप्त भाव के अनुसार भी, इसने काफी खुफिया बातों का भी रहस्योद्घाटन किया है।

अनुवाद-किसी ने उत्तर पाने के लिए एक प्रश्न उठाया-पिछली दो सहस्राब्दियों का सबसे महान आविष्कार क्या था? दुनिया के सूझबूझ वाले लोगों ने उत्तर में समाचार पत्रों को पिछली दो सहस्राब्दियों का सबसे बड़ा आविष्कार चुना । मेरे विचार में एक महानगरीय समाचार पत्र का अंकेक्षण किया गया और यह देखा गया कि वहाँ पर समाचार पत्रों के वितरण में घटने की प्रवृत्ति है। परन्तु भारत में हमारा अनुभव इसके बिल्कुल विपरीत रहा है। जो भूमि समाचार पत्रों ने भारत के स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन व भारत के विकास में निभाई है, वह असाधारण है। मि. मेमन मेथ्यू में अपने पत्र मलाया मनोरमा के अनुभव का उल्लेख किया जिसने समाचार पत्रों की स्वतंत्रता का धर्मयुद्ध किया था। इसकी विजय केरल में रोमांचित अनुभव था। आज इस समाचार पत्र का प्रसारण सर्वाधिक प्रसारणों में से एक है। यह बड़े महत्त्व की बात है कि भारत में स्थानीय भाषाओं के समाचार पत्र अपने पांव पर खड़े हो गए और निःसन्देह उनका प्रसारण वितरण राष्ट्रीय समाचार पत्रों में भी आगे बढ़ गया।

अनुवा-में यह कहना चाहता हूँ कि इलेक्ट्रॉनिक माध्यम से स्पर्धा में समाचार पत्र कभी-कभी घटनाओं को तुच्छ व बाजारू बना देते हैं। मुझे दो हाल ही की घटनाएं याद हैं, और दो वास्तविक बोनाओं को छोड़ दिया जाना । मैं खजुराहो में खजुराहो के उत्सव का उद्घाटन करने गया था, जो कि रंगारंग व सार्थक उत्सव था। उसी समय न्यूयॉर्क में बिल्लियों का फैशन ! मेला लगा। हमारे कुछ समाचार पत्रों ने एक बालकटी बिल्ली कों फैशन शो के लिए कपड़े पहनाए जाने को बड़ा महत्व दिया । परन्तु उन्होंने वही महत्व खजुराहो उत्सव को न दिया। मैं इसे समाचार पत्रों के महत्त्व को गिराना समझता हूँ। यह अविरोध्य प्रवृत्ति है। परन्तु इसे रोकना चाहिए, जिसे मि. मेमन मेथ्यू ने अपनी संस्कृति की पहचान का संरक्षण करने की संज्ञा दी।

अनुवाद-भरतीय समाचार पत्र न केवल प्रसारण में विशाल हैं बल्कि वे लोगों के मुख्य भोजन भी बन गए हैं। बिना समाचार पत्र पढ़े कोई भी अपने दिन का कार्य आरम्भ करने की सोच नहीं सकता। इस प्रकार समाचार पत्र हमारे जीवन का अभिन्न अंग बन गया है।
