Present Indefinite

This form is used in case of:
1. things happening in the present
Example:

  • She is a teacher.

2. something that happens repeatedly
Example:

  • They disturb me.

3. a habit or a routine
Example:

  • He goes to work every day.

4. describing something that is part of a given situation
Example:

  • In summers the sun rises very early.

5. giving instructions or offering advice
Example:

  • Switch off the fan, please!

6. stating a permanent truth
Example:

  • The sun rises in the east.

7. to make future time reference when the event is part of a fixed time table
Example:

  • This year Diwali falls on a Sunday.

8. in exclamatory sentences
Example:

  • Here comes the bride!

9. in commentaries
Example:

  • Sachin hits the ball for a six!

10. instead of Present Continuous with certain verbs
Examples:

  • I see her coming.
  • I have a cold.

Present Continuous

This form is used:
1. to refer to something happening at the time of speaking
Example:

  • Please don’t talk so loudly, my mother is sleeping.

2. when we talk about something connected with the present time
Example:

  • These days more and more people are learning to drive.

3. when we refer to a situation that is more or less temporary
Example:

  • She is looking for a new accommodation.

4. for an action that is planned for the near future
Example:

  • I am going to see a movie today.

5. for a persistent habit
Example:

  • She is forever grumbling about something or the other.

Verbs Not Used In Continuous Tense

  1. see, hear, smell, notice, recognize: perception
  2. appear, look, seem: appearance
  3. want, wish, desire, feel, like, love, hate, hope, refuse, prefer: emotion
  4. think, suppose, belief, agree, understand, remember, forget, know: thinking
  5. have, own, possess, belong to possession

Present Perfect

This form is used
1. to indicate activities completed in the immediate past
Example:

  • He has just completed his homework.

2. to express past actions when no definite time is given
Example:

  • I have seen the movie ‘Gone With the Wind’.

3. to describe past events that have an impact on the present
Examples:

  • He has washed the dishes.
  • I have cut my finger.

4. to denote an action that began in the past but continues up to the present (using/or, since, etc.)
Example:

  • I have known her for a long time.

Present Perfect Continuous

This form is used to refer to something that began in the past but is still happening at the time of speaking. Example: I have been reading ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ for the past one week.

Past Indefinite

  • We were eating our dinner when he came.

2. when we talk about something that was a persistent habit in the past

Past Perfect

This form is used to indicate the earlier of the two activities that happened in the past.
Example:

  • The train had already left by the time I reached the station.

Past Perfect Continuous

This form is used to refer to something that began in the past and continued upto a point of reference in the past.
Example:

  • I had been reading ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ for the last one week when he came to see me.
