The Maratha developed an effective administration system. The main features of their administration are given below:

  • The main source of the state income was taxes like the Chauth’ and ’Sardeshmukhi’. Chauth was one- fourth of the land revenue. It was collected in return of the protection to the territories which were not under the direct control of the king. Sardeshmukhi was an additional one-tenth.
  • There was an efficient team of officers to run the adminstration under the Maratha king.
  • There were 280 forts in Shivaji possession. A Havaldar controlled each fort and the surrounding territory.
  • The army was divided into different grades. Shivaji army fought Guerilla war in which a small band of soldiers could easily attack the large enemy force and the runaway to safe places.
