Dear Diary,
Today, I met an officer while I was trying to behave like a dog. He looked at me strangely and then asked me what I was doing? Then he asked me. Why I didn’t want to remain as a human being? He was not smiling or making fun of me but that set me thinking. It suddenly dawned upon me that one cannot keep on changing his mind everyday.
Now, I have determined that I will not do such foolish activities anymore. I will study hard and become a good human being first. When I tell this to anybody, nobody will laugh at me anymore. I want to thank that officer when I meet him again for giving me such valuable advice.

How Daddy Decided What He Wanted to Be Summary in English

Children often fail to understand various professions and responsibilities that go with them. They get confused about choosing a career and what they want to become when they grow up. Author’s father also had an ever-changing opinion about what he wanted to be when he grew up – until somebody (an officer) told him that everybody has to be a good human being first.

When his father was quite young he used to say that he wanted to be a ‘Night- watchman’. To a child a nightwatchman’s job appears to be an attractive one because he is awake when everybody else is asleep and can shout loudly whereas everybody else is sleeping quietly.

Then, he got attracted towards an ice¬cream vendor for again a funny reason that an ice-cream vendor can eat as much ice¬cream as he likes and can also offer it to children free of cost.
After a few days the author’s father went to the railway station and saw a shunter. He found it interesting how a shunter plays with the cars and locomotives. On hearing this his father asked him about ice-cream. At last the author’s father found a way out by which he could become both. He told that he would sell ice-cream in the morning and then go to the railway station to shunt the cars. After shunting he would again go and sell the ice-cream.

After that author’s father wanted to be a pilot, an actor, a turner, a sailor, a shepherd, etc. Finally he wanted to become a dog.

He started practising how to run on four legs all day and also tried to bite an old lady. In spite of practising, he could not learn how to scratch behind his ear with his foot. One day when he was pretending to be a dog, an officer who was passing by asked him what he was doing. The author’s father replied that he wanted to become a dog. The officer asked him what sort of a human being he was, if he couldn’t even be a dog. Asking so, the officer went away. That set the ball rolling and author’s father felt ashamed of himself. He thought and realised that he was too small to know what he wanted to be. Now whosoever asked the author’s father about what he wanted to be when he grew up, he replied that he wanted to become a good human being.
