DAV Class 4 SST Chapter 6 Notes – Waste Management

  • Waste management is not an easy affair. Every day thousands of tonnes of waste is thrown out from our households, offices, factories, etc.
  • The waste material mainly consists of papers, broken glass, metal or plastic goods, vegetable and fruit peels and leftover food.
  • The amount of garbage is increasing day by day due to various reasons. This garbage affects the quality of air, water and land. It also causes several diseases.
  • Waste materials are of two types-biodegradable wastes and non-biodegradable wastes. Biodegradable wastes such as dry leaves, papers etc. can be converted into harmless substances by dumping them in a pit. But non-biodegradable wastes such as nails, polythene bags, etc. cannot be converted into harmless substances.
  • Some waste materials such as plastic, glass, paper are recyclable. Recycling protects the environment in many ways.
  • There are different ways of disposing of waste-landfills, burning the trash, recycling and making compost. Since these methods are costly, it is desired from every citizen that he/she tries his/her best in reducing the amount of garbage.
  • It is our duty to remove waste heaps. People must be encouraged to construct toilets in rural areas. In urban areas more toilets must be made.
  • Our country produces about 0.2 to 0.6 kg of garbage per head, per day. Garbage from houses are collected by sweepers. The dustbins at roadsides are emptied into garbage trucks and taken to landfills.
  • Garbage: Waste material.
  • Biodegradable: A substance or chemical that can be changed to a harmless natural state by the action of bacteria and will therefore not damage the environment.
  • Non-biodegradable: A substance or chemical that cannot be changed to a harmless natural state by the action of bacteria and may therefore damage the environment.
  • Recycling: Separating usable materials from the waste and converting them into new products.
  • Landfill: An area of land where large amounts of waste material are buried under the earth.
  • Trash: Things that are thrown away because they are no longer useful.
  • Compost: A mixture of decayed plants, food, etc. that can be added to soil to help plants grow.
