Relative Pronouns
A relative pronoun refers to the noun it follows in the same sentence. The relative pronoun relates the noun with the rest of the information.

Examples:

  • The man who came here in the evening is my patient. (who refers to the man)
  • Was it your suitcase that fell off the car? (that refers to suitcase)
  • Ritu went to the audition which was being held at the hall. (which refers to the audition)

When two sentences share the same noun, we can join them by using an appropriate relative pronoun.

Relative pronouns: Who vs Whom
The relative pronoun who is used when the noun being referred to is the subject. Whom, on the other hand, is used when the noun being referred to is the object.
Examples:

  • The cousin, who stayed with me during the holidays, is coming to meet me.
  • The cousin, with whom I stayed during the holidays, is coming to meet me.

In spoken or informal English, we often leave out the relative pronoun in certain cases. In the case of whom, the position of the accompanying prepositions is changed.
Examples:

  • The teacher about whom you were telling me is absent today.
  • The teacher you were telling me about is absent today.
