Common nouns are the names of ordinary objects, places, things, etc. They can be used to refer to any or all members of a class or kind of things. So, mountain, hill, stream, river, and ocean are all common nouns.

Countable nouns are the nouns that can be counted. They have both singular and plural forms.

Things like eggs, cats, dolls, balls, etc. can be counted. They are all countable nouns.

A countable noun always takes either the indefinite (a, an) or definite (the) article when it is singular. When plural, it takes the definite article if it refers to a definite, specific group and no article if it is used in a general sense.

  • The Chief guest has arrived.
  • I am expecting a guest for dinner.
  • The guests have just arrived.
  • Guests are welcome anytime.

Uncountable nouns are the nouns that cannot be counted. They mostly appear in their singular form: rice, wheat, milk, sugar, etc.

Uncountable nouns never take the indefinite article (a, an), but they do take singular verbs. The is sometimes used with uncountable nouns in the same way it is used with plural countable nouns, that is, to refer to a specific object, group or idea.
