Bedroom Skating Summary

This poem is composed by Gareth Owen. It is about a girl who is mad after skating. The poem has enough instances to show how mad is the poet’s sister after skating. There is no ice rink within fifty miles of her house even then the poet’s sister practises skating in her bedroom. She practises here as if it were the Olympic stadium. She wears skates in her feet and runs everywhere in the room without caring for anything in her way. She switches on the music very loudly and dances to the music wearing the skates.

She starts her practice early in the morning. She carries a pillow in her hand while skating. In the morning when the poet is having his breakfast his sister comes spinning round and round in such a way that his hands tremble and all the cornflakes fall down. On one Thursday morning she made the poet stand on the bed holding up a card marked ‘six’ which is a sign of victory. She is very dedicated towards skating. Even she knows that she cannot win the world title for skating and cannot get any gold medal. She also practises a lot.

The Collectors Summary

Dr. Mody had a hobby of collecting stamps and Jehangir came to Dr. Mody’s house where he showed him his first stamp collection in the form of an album. His first stamp album was gifted to him by his uncle Nusserwanji which was blank at that time but now it was full of colour stamps. The album contained stamps from different countries. Jehangir was so impressed by Mody’s talk and the album that he told Dr. Mody that he wanted to become stamp collector. Dr. Mody told him to bring an album for beginning and a packet of 100 assorted stamps from different countries.

Dr. Mody was very happy with Jehangir because he always wanted somebody like him who could learn everything so quickly and do his work neatly as Dr. Mody would himself do. Jehangir wanted to have a look on the first album that uncle Nusserwanji had gifted to Dr. Mody. But Uncle Burjor in turn took him to the ‘cupboard and told him to look at his stamps. The cupboard contained biscuit tins and sweet tins of all shapes and sizes. To his amazement, he saw that all the tins were full of stamps and the cupboard box had six empty albums.

Seeing Jehangir surprised, Dr. Mody told him that he had been collecting stamps for so many years as he had contacts in different countries and also due to the nature of his job he met so many people from different countries. He used to tell them about his hobby who in turn will send stamps to Dr. Mody. Dr Mody advised Jehangir to make lots and lots of friends and share hobbies with them. The collection depends on how you interact with different people and should also share his hobbies with them.

Respected ladies, gentlemen and my dear friends!

As all of us know that our school is celebrating “Book Week’ I would like to tell you about the need of reading books. Why should we read books? Reading books help us in making a better person. We can get a lot of interesting and knowledgeable information from the book by simply sitting at home. It helps us in making smart and also sharpening our personality. Good books give us an idea about the place and situation which in turn stimulates the imagination of the readers giving an impression as if the reader is himself in that situation. Reading books improves our vocabulary and also develops writing skills.

So, all the students are advised to read as many books as possible. You should visit library frequently and also keep a record of all the books you have read.

The Shoemaker and the Demon Summary

Once upon a time there was a shoemaker named Bhiku who lived in the city of Benaras. He was famous for making fine shoes. In spite of making fine shoes, Bhiku was very poor as he was in the habit of boasting of his bravery in front of people who came to him for getting their shoe made. Due to his habit, he was unable to concentrate on his work. At that time Benaras was ruled by a Maharaja who was fond of guavas. He used to have guava with all his meals. There was only one guava tree in Benaras.

One morning when the servants of Maharaja had gone to pluck guava from the tree, they came back trembling with fear as they had seen a demon at the tree. The Maharaja was very upset as he couldn’t have his meals without guava. He called upon the servants and asked to give him the brief description of the demon they had seen at the tree. The servants told him that he was wearing no shoes and had a long pointing queen head. The Maharaja ordered Bhiku to go and kill the monster. Bhiku decided to leave the city and started walking till he met the boatman who was mending his oar. He asked the boatman to help him but the boatman refused as it was late night.

Bhiku told him the whole story. After listening to Bhiku the boatman suggested him to go and face the monster. All of a sudden he saw a little man coming out of the branches. He was barefoot. He told Bhiku that he was a farmer who lived in a nearby village and was hiding at the tree. He feared of his wife who would not let him come inside the house barefoot as he had exchanged his shoes for a funny hat. Listening to this, Bhiku made a fine pair of shoes for him and the farmer went happily to his house. He told the king that he had killed the monster. Maharaja was overjoyed and made Bhiku the governor of one of his provinces. Even after Bhiku became governor, he still made shoes as a hobby.
