The Helpful Young Man Summary in English

Once upon a time, there was a peasant who had seven sons and plenty of land. One day when he woke up, he found that he was blind. Many doctors were called to treat his blindness but nobody could cure him. One day, a faqir (saint) visited the place and told him if he would rub the ash of a particular fish in his eyes, he would get back his sight. The old man told this to his sons but all the six sons were scared. They decided to send their youngest brother to search for the particular fish.

In spite of many obstacles, he managed to reach the remote ocean and caught the fish, but the fish pleaded to throw it back into the water for which she promised to help the young man by all means.The man told the fish about his father’s blindness. The fish told him to take some sand and touch it with its eyelids and then touch it to the eyelids of his father.

The young man went back and did the same and the old man’s eyesight restored. All the brothers were jealous of him because they thought that the father would give his entire wealth to him. They forced their younger brother to go back and to bring the eyes of that fish. The younger brother had to set out on his journey again. On the way, he met a buck who was running to save its life from hunters. The young man hid him in a ditch. The buck promised to help him any time when required and went away. After that he met a jackal and he saved him from hunters. He was then tired enough and wanted some rest and food. He reached a palace where lived a beautiful princess who had a magic mirror. She could see the reflection of anybody in the mirror.

बहुत पहले एक किसान अपने सात पुत्रों के साथ रहता था । उसके पास बहुत-सी ज़मीन थी। एक दिन जब वह सोकर उठा तो उसने पाया कि वह अंधा हो चुका था। उसके इलाज के लिए बहुत से डॉक्टरों को बुलाया गया। किंतु उसका कोई फायदा नहीं हुआ। एक दिन उनके घर एक फकीर आया और बताया कि यदि एक खास मछली की आँखों की राख उसकी आँखों में लगा दी जाए तो उसकी आँखें ठीक हो जाएगी । बूढ़े आदमी ने यह बात अपने बेटों को बताई लेकिन यह सुनकर उसके छह लड़के डर गए। उन्होंने कहा कि उनका सबसे छोटा भाई ही उस विशेष मछली की आँखों की राख को ला सकता है।

यह सुनकर छोटा भाई उस मछली की खोज में निकल पड़ा। रास्ते में विभिन्न रुकावटों के बावजूद भी वह उस मछली तक पहुँच गया। जब उसने मछली को पानी से निकाला तो वह बहुत डर गयी और उसने उस आदमी से उसे पानी में वापस डालने की विनती की जिसके बदले वह उसकी हर संभव मदद करने को तैयार थी। उस आदमी ने मछली को अपने पिता की आँखों के विषय में बताया। यह सुनकर मछली ने उससे कहा कि वह उसके पास की मिट्टी को उसकी आँखों में लगा दे और फिर उस मिट्टी को अपने पिता की आँखों में लगाने से उनकी आँखें ठीक हो जाएँगी। उसने ठीक वैसा ही किया और उसके पिता की आँखों की रोशनी वापस आ गयी। उसके बड़े भाईयों को यह देखकर बहुत ही ईर्ष्या हुई। उन्होंने सोचा कि अब उनके पिता अपनी जायदाद अपने छोटे पुत्र को दे देंगे। यह सोचकर उन्होंने कहा कि वह उन्हें उस मछली की आँखें लाकर दिखाए। यह सुनकर उनका छोटा भाई फिर वापस चल दिया। रास्ते में उसे एक हिरण मिला जो शिकारियों से अपनी जान बचाने के लिए भाग रहा था। उस व्यक्ति ने हिरण को पास की खाई में छुपने के लिए कहा और उसे बचा लिया। हिरण ने समय आने पर उसकी मदद करने का वादा किया। इसी तरह आगे जाकर उसने शिकारियों से एक सियार की भी जान बचाई।

सियार ने भी उसकी मदद करने का वादा किया। वह काफी थक चुका था और अत्यन्त भूखा भी था। कुछ आगे जाने पर वह एक महल में पहुँचा जहाँ एक बहुत ही खूबसूरत राजकुमारी रहती थी। उसके पास एक जादुई शीशा था। इस दर्पण में वह किसी का भी प्रतिबिंब देख सकती थी ।

उस राजकुमारी ने उससे कहा कि अगर वह अपने आपको छिपाने में सफल रहा तो वह उससे शादी कर लेगी अन्यथा उसका सिर काट दिया जाएगा। वह व्यक्ति मछली के पास पहुँचा। मछली उसे अपने पेट में छिपाकर गहरे समुद्र में ले गयी, परंतु राजकुमारी ने अपने जादुई शीशे से उसे देख लिया। राजकुमारी ने उसे एक और मौका दिया। इस बार वह हिरण की मदद से दूर पहाड़ियों में जा छिपा परंतु राजकुमारी के शीशे से फिर भी नहीं बच सका । राजकुमारी ने उसे आखिरी मौका दिया। वह सियार के पास गया। सियार ने उसे राजकुमारी के पलंग के नीचे छिपने के लिए कहा। सियार ने उसे वहाँ पहुँचाने में उसकी मदद की। बहुत खोजने पर भी राजकुमारी का शीशा उसे नहीं ढूंढ़ सका । राजकुमारी ने गुस्से में अपना जादुई शीशा तोड़ दिया और हार स्वीकार कर ली। उसने उस व्यक्ति से शादी कर ली और दोनों खुशी-खुशी रहने लगे।
