Properties of Water Class 5 DAV Notes

Soluble Substances:
→ When a substance completely mixes in water, it is said to have dissolved in water. In that case, no particle of the substance is visible. A substance which dissolves in water is called soluble in water. Examples: salt, sugar, lemon juice, etc.

→ Solution: Mixture formed by dissolving a substance completely in a medium is called solution.

→ Solute: A substance which gets dissolved in a medium to form a solution is called a solute. Examples: sugar and salt are solutes of water.

→ Solvent: Medium in which the substance is dissolved is called a solvent. Water is a universal solvent because it dissolves most of the substances in it.

→ Insoluble: A substance which does not dissolve in water is called insoluble in water. Examples: sand, chalk, clay, etc.

→ Oil is insoluble in water.

→ Carbon dioxide and oxygen gases are soluble in water but nitrogen gas is insoluble in water.

→ Floating and Sinking: Some substances can float on water, while many others sink in water. Rubber, cork, paper and wood are examples of substances which can float on water. On the other hand, stone, sand and iron sinks in water.

DAV Class 5 Science Chapter 8 Notes - Properties of Water

→ Physical States of Water: Water is found in all the three physical states in nature. Ice is the solid form of water, normal water is in liquid form and water vapour is the gaseous form of water.

→ Water Cycle: Water from oceans, seas, rivers and lakes keep on changing into vapour because of heat from the sun. The vapour rises up in the sky. When the water vapour goes very high in the sky, it forms clouds because of condensation. When a cloud becomes very big, it falls on the earth in the form of raindrop. Once again the cycle continues.
DAV Class 5 Science Chapter 8 Notes - Properties of Water -1

→ The cyclic process of evaporation and condensation of water is called water cycle. Water cycle maintains the flow of water on the earth. Raindrops are the purest form of water. But while reaching the earth, impurities get mixed with raindrops.

→ Solution: A mixture of solute and solvent.

→ Solvent: A medium in which another substance is dissolved.

→ Solute: A substance which gets dissolved in a medium to form a solution.

→ Vapourisation: When water turns into vapour because of high heat, the process is called vapourisation.

→ Evaporation: Change of water into vapour at normal temperature is called evaporation.

→ Water Cycle: The cyclic process of evaporation and condensation of water on earth.
