Rounding off to the nearest hundred (100) and thousand (1000)
Example 2.
Round off the given numbers to the nearest hundred.
142, 486, 4385, 950
Solution:
142 → 100
(142 is nearer to 100 than 200)
486 → 500
4385 → 4400
(If the digit in the tens place is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, we round off to the nearest multiple of hundred which is less than the number)
950 → 1000
(If the digit in the tens place is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, we round off to the nearest multiple of hundred which is greater than the number)
In order to round off numbers to the nearest thousand, look at the digit in the hundreds place.
