The first Prime Minister of independent India, the architect of modern India, a royal human being who was respected the world over, one who took care of all human values, a great politician and an extremely ethical person means Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He loved children. He considered children to be the future of our nation. He loved children as much as he loved his signature red roses. He was ‘Chacha Nehru’ to all kids. His birthday, 14th November is celebrated all over India as ‘Children’s Day’. Nehru was an expert at developing the nation on an intelligent level as well as taking care of the crucial moments of nation building.
Nehru was a great freedom fighter, social reformer and an extremely well-read politician. He was the Prime Minister of India from 15th August, 1947 to 27th May, 1964; i.e., for about 17 long years. Three general elections were held during his tenure as a Prime Minister. Jawaharlal Nehru was adamant about establishing democratic values during elections. He formed the Organisation Committee of which he was the Chairman. Three Five-Year plans were carried out during his prime ministerial tenure. With the aid of these plans noteworthy progress was seen in the fields of agriculture, irrigation, industry, education, transport and communication, regional independence, health, etc.
Jawaharlal would never take any decision on any national or international problem without first consulting and debating with his council of ministers. Nehru played an important role in the framing of India’s Foreign Policy. He proved to be a positive influence as an arbitrator during the Korean War. His contribution to the Suez Canal question and the Congo problem was noteworthy. He did good work in solving the burning issues of West Berlin, Austria and Laos.
There was an amazing amalgamation of the east and the west in Jawaharlal Nehru. He always said, “The coming together of the east and west gives me the feeling of spirituality not only in my life but in every public work too. 1 may be unknown to the west and it is not possible for me to become a part of the west, but / can always experience emotional movement in my nation.”
Jawaharlal was a great orator. He was also famous all over the world as an astute politician. He was the promoter of the non-alignment movement and impartial foreign policy. He was against military alliances and always stood for lasting world peace. He worked for it relentlessly. He gained a respectable place for India in international politics. He was the initiator of the principles of ‘Panchsheel’. Jawaharlal was a staunch opponent of communalism and regionalism. He was a firm advocate of secularism.
In 1955, Jawaharlal Nehru was honoured with the award and title of ‘Bharat Ratna’.
