Dear Rohan,

I hope this letter finds you the best of health and spirits. I could not reply to your letter earlier, for I had gone to Delhi for a week. I had accompanied my mother who has won this year’s National Award for ‘Meritorious Teachers’. The award was bestowed on her, because of the excellent performance of her students in the secondary examination.

The ceremony was held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. It is a majestic complex which has a huge auditorium, surrounded with plush green lawns, having innumerable water fountains. The auditorium has plush interiors, with wood panelled walls, thick carpeted floors, and brightly upholstered push back seats. The aesthetically designed, dais has huge chandeliers and spotlights. There were many press photographers and TV cameramen facing the dais, to record the historic event. The recipients of the awards were seated to the left the dais, while the VIP’s were seated to the right. The honorable Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was seated in the front row, with members of his cabinet and other dignitaries.

At precisely 11 AM the President Shri A. P. J. Kalam arrived in grand style, escorted by his body guards. The spectators rose with respect, as he was led to the dais by the honourable Prime Minister. The Minister of Human Resources Shri Aijun Singh read out his welcome speech. This was followed by a cultural program of dance and music. Thereafter the actual award ceremony commenced. Each teacher was called to the dais, to receive the award from the President. The award comprised of a shawl, a gold plated memento, and a certificate. It was indeed a great moment for my mother, when her name was called out. She received the award, amidst thunderous applause from the audience. It was a proud moment for all of us, for she was the lone recipient of this honour from Lucknow.

The award ceremony was followed by a sumptuous lunch, hosted in the sprawling lawns of the complex. I met great personalities, and got myself photographed with them. I shall show you the photographs when you visit Lucknow.

It was indeed a great event, which I shall never forget for a long time to come. I wish you had been there to share this experience. How are your studies going on? Please give my regards to uncle and aunty, and reply to my letter at the earliest.

Your friend,
Ankit
