I recall being rudely awakened one fine morning, by a loud announcement being made by a man moving in a rickshaw. Straining my ears, I realised that he was inviting the public to the inauguration of the Lohia Hospital by the Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. This was an important social event in my city which was to be held on the 10th of October at 11 a.m.

The Lohia Hospital, a brain child of the Chief Minister, had been coming up in Gomti Nagar, a prestigious colony of Lucknow for quite some time. Located on the main road, it offered good connectivity to people coming from various parts of the city, and adjoining districts. The massive hospital had been equipped with the most sophisticated medical equipments, and had some of the best doctors from renowned institutions. The hospital would fulfil a long standing demand of the residents of the locality, for there was no government hospital, within a radius of 10 km.

Being curious about the facility offered by the hospital, and also to have a glimpse of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, I decided to attend the event, which was to unfold close to my house. I reached there well before the event commenced. The road was swamped with cars that had red and blue beacon lights. A large number of policemen and other security personnel stood guard around the campus.

The flower decked gate led to a huge pandal, in which were seated thousands 6f spectators. The elevated dais was decorated with bright coloured curtains. Few large cushioned chairs, with mikes on the table were placed for dignitaries. On one side of the dais, was the press gallery, on which were seated a large number of journalists from the print and electronic media.

At sharp 11 am Dr A. Narain, Head of the hospital announced the arrival of the chief guest. I along with the spectators rose to see the doughty Chief Minister being escorted to the dais, amidst dazzling flash light of cameras. There was the welcome address, and presentation of bouquet, to the chief guest, after which Dr Narain invited the Chief Minister to address the gathering.

In his brief address the chief guest exhorted the doctors, to fulfill the aspirations of the people, by providing quality health care facilities to them. Dr Narain then invited the Chief Minister to unveil the plaque, and formally dedicate the hospital to the public. Amidst showering of nose petals the plaque was unveiled, and the function finally came to an end.

This was a remarkable event of social importance for the residents of the locality, who were till now dependent on private hospitals and nursing homes for health care facilities. This super speciality hospital would mitigate the sufferings of the poor and provide specialised treatment to the people of the state.
