‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’ Hobbies are the ‘play’ part in our life which make it interesting and worth living. A hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure. Hobbies can include anything from collecting antiques, stamps or any creative artistic activity, sports or pursuing other activity that gives happiness and joy to the person. Any such activity that brings joy and happiness can never be a waste of time for anyone.

Life is full of stress. Pursuing a hobby reduces stress. The children are burdened with studies, the youth suffer from anxiety caused by study or their career, the middle aged and the elderly suffer from worldly and health worries. In such a depressing scenario, a good hobby acts as a safety valve, releasing the mental and emotional stress. It has a stabilising effect on life by reducing the stress thereby making it happy.

The daily chores make life a drudgery of routine. Hobbies provide the much needed variety to life. It often gives one motivation and inspiration to do great things. Some people have become millionaires by collecting rare stamps and antiques. Others have made hobbies their profession in later life.

Hobbies can be of any type depending on one’s interest and liking. Some take to collecting stamps (philately), antiques, while others pursue photography, gardening, reading, painting, writing, music rearing animals or even sporting activities like hunting, boating, fishing etc.

The underlying principle of any hobby being that it should be enjoyable to the person. Besides enjoyment one acquires knowledge and awareness of things which normally one would not notice. It is an ideal way to spend the leisure time in a far better way than sleeping or gossiping which is a criminal waste of time.

Hobbies channelise the excess time and energy to more productive use. This energy, if channelised in the right direction, through promotion of hobbies in schools and colleges, can help the youth in becoming good citizens. The absence of a hobby makes one feel lost and life becomes an unending drudgery of routine.

Hobbies play an important part in our life and can never be a waste of time. One must inculcate and nurture hobbies to enjoy its fruit throughout life. Indeed, the time spent in nurturing a hobby is time well spent.
