The speaker in the poem is a post-graduate young man. He has been applying for a job and hoping to get it. He promises to buy a Maharaja dhoti and a silken shirt for his father out of his first pay.
His old father’s eyes are filled with tears of gratitude and his lips move in prayer. But the young man does not get a job, and cannot fulfil his promise. His father dies. His mother remembers how father was full of pride when he wore a Maharaja dhoti and a silken shirt at the time of his wedding. But now in a just struggle to survive, the young man has forgotten about the Maharaja dhoti and sliken kurta.

इस कविता में वक्ता एक स्नातकोत्तर युवक है। वह नौकरी के लिए प्रार्थना पत्र भेजता रहता है और आशा करता है कि उसे नौकरी मिल जाएगी। वह अपने पिता के लिए प्रथम वेतन में से एक महाराजा धोती व रेशमी कुर्ता खरीदने का वचन देता है।
उसके बूढ़े पिता की आँखों में ध न्यवाद के आंसू आते हैं और उसके होंठ प्रार्थना में हिलते हैं। परन्तु युवक को नौकरी नहीं मिलती, और वह वचन पूरा नहीं कर सकता। उसका पिता मर जाता है। उसकी माँ उसे बताती है कि उसके पिता ने जब विवाह में महाराजा धोती और रेशमी कुर्ता पहना था, तो उसे कितना गर्व हुआ था। परन्तु अब तो युवक जीवित रहने के संघर्ष में महाराजा धोती व रेशमी कुर्ते के बारे में भूल गया है।
