W.B. Yeats (1865 – 1939) was an Irish poet and dramatist. He worked incessantly for Irish independence and for an Irish literature separate from British literature. He was co-founder of the Irish National Theatre company and literary revival with his play. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923.
He was instrumental behind the Irish theatrical, cultural and literary revival with his play, The Countless Cathleen and the collection of stories “The Celtic Twilight”. He collected old Irish folk tales and legends. The cleborate style of his earlier work was influenced by the pre-Raphaelites while his later work used a sparser more lyrical style and was influenced by sympolism, mysticism and the occult.

The poet in his youthfulness enjoyed more with his wife and friends. Sitting near the fire with his family or friends he always talked about love and politics. Now in the old age he has become alone. No one sees or talks with him.
Love for beauty is still present in his heart. He has a greater attraction for his past life.
Everybody neglects him like the broken tree which has become fruitless and flowerless now. Time has transfigured him. So he hates it (the time). He says “I spit into the face of Time, that has transfigured me”.

प्रस्तुत कविता महाकवि “कोट्स” के कविता संग्रह “दी ओल्ड पेंशनर” का संशोधित संस्करण है। कवि अपने युवा-जीवन को स्मरण करते हुए अपने वर्तमाम जीवन से तुलना कत्ता है। अपने जीवन के दोनों चरणों में विरोधाभास कवि को उद्विग्न कर देता है। अपने यौवन काल में उसे “प्रेम एवं राजनीति” दोनों से काफी लगाव था । कवि ने युवावस्था में जीवन के आनन्द का भरपूर आनन्द लिया है। वह प्रेम तथा राजनीति में सदैव लिप्त रहा। उसके जीवन के उस स्वर्णिम काल में उसे अपार सम्मान एवं प्रेम प्राप्त हुआ।
अब वह वृद्धावस्था को प्राप्त हो गया है। उसका शरीर शिथिल एवं दुर्बल हो गया। मुखाकृति अनाकर्षक एवं कांतिहीन हो गई है। यद्यपि सुन्दरता के प्रति आसक्ति उसके हृदय में अभी भी विद्यमान है। अपने विगत जीवन की मधुर स्मृति मानस पटल पर वर्तमान है । यौवन काल के उत्कर्ष के प्रति आकर्षण हृदय में संजाये है। किन्तु अब प्रत्येक व्यक्ति उसकी उपेक्षा करता है, उससे दूर भागता है।
उपेक्षा का यह दंश उसको मानसिक संताप से पीड़ित कर देता है । जीवन की इस बेला में वह अपने को टूटे हुए वृक्ष (The broken tree) के समान समझने लगा है जो उसके समान ही फूल एवं फल रहित हो गया है । वह भलीभांति समझता है कि समय ने ही उसके साथ ऐसा अन्याय किया है। समय का ही वह मारा हुआ है, समय का यह व्यवहार शत्रुवत् है। अत: वह समय से घृणा करता है जिसने उसके शरीर के साथ ऐसा मजाक किया है।

First Stanza:
Although I shelter from the rain
Under a broken tree
My chair was nearest to the fire
In every company
That talked of love or politics,
Ere Time transfigured me.
Word Meaning: Shelter = शरण, छाया। Broken = टूटा हुआ । Tree = वृक्ष । Fire = आग (आग की अंगीठी) | Politics = राजनीति । Ere = पहले (समय से पहले)।
Meaning of the Stanza: The speaker sat nearest to the fire, under the broken tree in every company that discussed about love and politics. But time has disfigured him and so he keeps away from this company though he still takes shelter under a broken tree to save himself from the rain.
The speaker expresses his agony over the change of time which has disfigured him. He has lost his attractive appearance.
भावार्थ-वक्ता आग के निकट एक टूटे वृक्ष के नीचे प्रेम एवं राजनीति पर चर्चा करने के लिए अन्य मित्रों के साथ बैठता था। किन्तु समय ने उसके व्यक्तित्व को पूर्णरूपेण परिवर्तित कर दिया है। वह पहले जैसा युवा एवं आकर्षक नहीं रह गया है। अतः अब वह उन बैठकों में भाग नहीं लेता है। यद्यपि वह अभी भी वर्षा से बचने के लिए उस टूटे वृक्ष के नीचे खड़ा होता है।
वक्ता समय के साथ अपनी शारीरिक रचना में आए बदलाव का वर्णन कर रहा है। अब वह अनाकर्षक व्यक्तित्व का होकर रह गया है। वह अपने को उपेक्षित महसूस करता है। उसे इस बात का अत्यन्त खेद है।
Second Stanza:
Though lads are making pikes again
For some conspiracy,
And crazy rascals rage their fill
At human tyranny,
My contemplations are of Time
That has transfigured me.
Word Meaning: Lad= लड़का, छोकरा । Pikes=एक नुकीला हथियार । Consipiracy= षड्यन्त्र, योजना । Crazy = पागल | Rascal= दुर्जन, बदमाश । Rage = बहुत क्रोधित होना, रोष । Fill = भरना । Tyranny= शोषण, दमन । Contemplations = चिन्तन, विचार करना । Time = समय, अवधि । Transfigured = रूपान्तरित किया, बदल दिया।
Meaning of the Stanza: The speaker says that some notorious young persons are making some sharp pointed weapons. They have planned to use it for the victimization of good people. He deeply thinks over human torture by them. He also realizes that time has completely changed his appearance.
The speaker is highly disappointed to see the inhuman deeds performed by some nasty young men. He is also disperated that time has transfigured him and now he has nothing but contemplating over the matter.
भावार्थ-वक्ता का कथन है कि कुछ दुष्ट प्रकृति के असमाजिक तत्व तेज नोकवाला (नुकीला) हथियार बना रहे हैं। वे उसका प्रयोग सज्जन लोगों पर अत्याचार करने तथा उत्पीड़न के लिए करते हैं। वह यह भी अनुभव करता है कि समय द्वारा उसके व्यक्तित्व एवं मुखाकृति में व्यापक बदलाव आ गया है। उसने अपना आकर्षण खो दिया है।
वक्ता कुछ दुष्टों द्वारा अमानवीय आचरण एवं अत्याचार से भी काफी निराश है। उसे इस बात का दुःख है कि वह इस अनाचार का प्रतिकार भी नहीं कर सकता। अब समय ने उसे दुर्बल एवं कांतिहीन बना दिया है।
Third Stanza:
There’s not a woman turns her face
Upon a broken tree.
And yet the beauties that I loved
Are in my memory;
I spit into the face of Time
That has transfigured me.
Word Meaning : Turn= बदलना, घुमाना | Broken = टूटा-फूटा, खडित । Memory = स्मरण शक्ति, याददाश्त, यादगार | Spit = थूकना, निरादार करना।
Meaning of the Stanza : The speaker remembers the days when he was quite young. He had loved beauties around him specially women. Now not a single woman likes to see him because he has become old. He is looking like a broken tree. As such he hates Time now because it has transfigured him. It has changed his appearance. He is so much disgusted with the misdeeds of Time that he spits on its face.
The speaker expresses his frustration in this stanza over the cruel act of Time. He has personified ‘Time’ here.
भावार्थ-वक्ता अपने यौवन काल को याद करता है। उस समय वह सुन्दर एवं आकर्षक युवक था। उसने अपने चारों ओर फैले सौन्दर्य से प्रेम किया था। उसे सभी लोग पसंद करते थे। अब महिलाएँ उनके निकट बैठना एवं बातें करना पसन्द नहीं करतीं। उनलोगों ने उससे (वक्ता) मुँह फेर लिया है। इसका कारण यह है कि अब वह वृद्ध हो गया है। उसमें कोई आकर्षण नहीं रह गया था। वह टूटे-फूटे जर्जर वृक्ष के समान हो गया है। समय ने यह सारे परिवर्तन किए हैं। वह समय का मारा हुआ है। इसलिए उसे समय से घृणा हो गई है जिसने उसे इस दशा में पहुंचा दिया है।
वक्ता ने इस काव्यांश में समय के क्रूर चक्र के प्रति अपना क्षोभ व्यक्त किया है। उसने इस कविता में ‘समय’ का मानवीकरण किया है।
