H. E. Bates (1905-1974) was born at Northampton, in central England. He was well-acquainted with the country side English, f especially the peasants who lived there. A well known short story writer, he worked for some time as a journalist. His first novel was published when he was only 21 years old. He wrote many short stories about air men and their adventures based on his experiences in the “Royal Air Force”. His important works include “Fair stood the Wind for France (1944), The Purple Plain (1974), The scarlet Sword (1951), The Darling Buds of May (1958) and The, Jacaranda Tree (1949).

The present short story ‘The Earth’ was set in the English I country side. It is about a farmer Johnson and his only son Benjy who appears
to be a simple minded person. The story very well depicts the laziness of the parents and the growing selfishness and cunningness of their simple-minded son who finally drives them away from their home.

The story “The Earth’ has been written by H. E. Bates. This story is the life sketch of a farmer Johnson and his son, Benjy. The author has beautifully | presented the reality of what happens in most of the families in present day life. It starts from the family consisting of Mr. Johnson, a farmer, his wife and his only affectionate son Benjy. Benjy appears to be a simple minded person. The story very well depicts the laziness of the parents. It also throws light on the growing selfishness and cunningness of their simple-minded son, who finally drives them away from their home.
Johnson is a farmer, who has no land of his own. He has obtained about four acres of plot on lease for cultivation helping him in meeting family’s expenditure. Benjy is mentally underdeveloped. His father goes to a doctor for consultation who advises Johnson to get his son engaged in some business, preferably in poultry business. Accordingly Benjy is engaged in that business.
The income out of the sell of hen’s egg is deposited in the bank in Benjy’s name. When Benjy becomes twenty one year old his father hands over the amount deposited with the bank to Benjy. By the time Benjy’s pass-book showed a balance of Rs. two hundred thirty pound. Benjy purchases some land of Mr. Witmore from that money and expands his poultry business on the land purchased. He becomes a rich man of his area withhin years. He marries Florence, working in his poultry farm against his parent’s will. Then there comes a change in his attitude towards his parents.
At first he directs his parents to shift to a smaller room of the house. After sometime he stops joint kitchen arrangement and leaves his parents isolated. Afterwards finally he flatly directs his parents to shift from his house and to settle themselves somewhere else. Not only this, he personally drives them away from their home by his car.
Thus the story is a true description of wrong dealings and behaviours of a son with his parents, that happens at present.

एच. ई. बेट्स द्वारा लिखित कहानी “अर्थ” “The Earth” जॉनसन नामक एक किसान उसकी पत्नी एवं एकमात्र पुत्र बेंजी के जीवन की झाँकी प्रस्तुत करती है । लेखक ने अत्यन्त कुशलतापूर्वक वर्तमान समय में पारिवारिक जीवन में घटित वास्तविकताओं का सफल चित्रण किया है।
कहानी जॉनसन उसकी पत्नी तथा परमप्रिय एकलौते पुत्र बेंजी के जीवन की घटनाओं से प्रारंभ होती है । बेंजी एक असामान्य बालक है जिसकी बुद्धि का विकास सामान्य बच्चों जैसा नहीं हुआ है । माता-पिता उसकी मंद बुद्धि से चिन्तित रहते हैं । उसके पिता जॉनसन डॉक्टर से परामर्श लेते हैं। डॉक्टर उसके बेटे को किसी कार्य में व्यस्त करने की सलाह देते हैं । जॉनसन के एक कृषक होने के नाते डॉक्टर बेंजी को मुर्गीपालन व्यवसाय में लगाने पर जोर देते हैं । तदनुसार पिता द्वारा अपने बेटे को मुर्गीपालन के कार्य में लगा दिया जाता है। बेंजी लगन तथा उत्साह से अपने कार्य में लग जाता है । मुर्गियों द्वारा दिए गए अंडों को बाजार में बेचकर पैसे एकत्र किए जाते हैं। जॉनसन अपने पुत्र के नाम बैंक में पैसे जमा करता रहता है ।
कुछ ही दिनों में व्यवसाय में अप्रत्याशित वृद्धि होती है। कुछ वर्षों बाद जब बेंजी की आयु इक्कसीस वर्ष की हो जाती है, बैंक में जमा राशि माता-पिता द्वारा बेंजी को सौंप दी जाती है। उसकी उक्त पासबुक में दो सौ तीस पाउंड की राशि जमा हो चुकी थी । किन्तु वह कृतज्ञता ज्ञापन नहीं करता है। माता-पिता को इसपर आश्चर्य होता है । किन्तु वे इसे अपने पुत्र की सरलता समझते हैं । बेंजी अब काफी चतुर तथा निपुण हो गया है । वह उस राशि से जमीन खरीद लेता है तथा उस भूमि पर मुर्गी-पालन का व्यवसाय बड़े पैमाने पर करता है। कुछ ही दिनों में वह उस क्षेत्र का एक धनवान व्यक्ति हो जाता है । अपने मुर्गी पालन केन्द्र में अनेक कर्मचारियों की नियुक्ति कर लेता है। उन्हीं में फ्लोरेंस नामक एक महिला भी है। उसका व्यक्तित्व आकर्षक नहीं है सुन्दर भी नहीं है । बेंजी उससे विवाह करना चाहता है । माता-पिता को यह प्रसतव पसन्द नहीं है । किन्तु बेंजी अपनी जिद पर दृढ़ है। उसे सुन्दर महिला के प्रति कोई अकर्षण नहीं है । वह केवल एक परिश्रमी जीवन-संगिनी चाहता है । विवाह होते ही उसमें काफी परिवर्तन आ जाता है । माता-पिता के प्रति उसका दृष्टिकोण बदल जाता है । फ्लोरेंस भी एक स्वार्थी तथा तुच्छ मानसिकता से युक्त महिला है। वह अपने सास-ससुर से दुर्व्यवहार करती है। बेंजी का भी अपने माता-पिता के प्रति व्यवहार पहले जैसा नहीं है । वह उन्हें उनके बरसों पुराने कमरा छोड़कर छोटे कमरे में जाने को कहता है।
रसोई की भी अपनी अलग व्यवस्था कर लेता है । अंत में कुछ ही दिनों के बाद बेंजी उनलोगों को उस मकान को छोड़कर अन्यत्र चले जाने को कहता है । उसका कहना है कि वह जमीन तथा मकान उसने खरीदा है । अतः उसमें उनलोगों को रहने का अधिकार नहीं है इतना ही नहीं, वह स्वयं अपनी कार में बैठाकर अपने माता-पिता को वहाँ से दूर के एक शहर की सड़क पर ले जाकर बिना कुछ कहे कार से उतार देता है । सामान्य शिष्टाचार का भी पालन नहीं करता । यह उसकी संवेदनशीलता तथा अमानवीय आचरण की पराकाष्ठा है।
इस प्रकार विद्वान लेखक ने अत्यन्त मनोवैज्ञानिक ढंग से आधुनिक सामाजिक व्यवस्था की स्वाभाविक प्रस्तुति की है।
