“I am the Daughter of the Land of Dravida” is a thoughtful poem composed by Amrita Pritam. Amrita Pritam has described in this poem. the different roles of women in different situations and times. The poem is subjective. The poet herself is a character is the poem. In the first stanza she says that she has two aspects of life. She is ‘Kam-kanya’ and ‘Kala-Kanya bath’.
As a Kama-kanya, she is the daughter of love and as a Kal-kanya she is the daughter of death. She says that she has come in this world wearing these two types of personalities. This is so because she is the daughter of the land of Dravid. In this stanza the poet wants to say that an Indian lady has to play two types of role in her life. The first role she has to play is the role of a creator. She is a symbol of love and affection. She gives birth to a child and nurses the whole family in a very beautiful manner. She loves her husband; father, mother, children and relatives. On the other hand, sometimes she plays the role of a destroyer. She takes the shape of Kali’ when it is needed and destroys the devils and the monsters. This is because she is the daughter of this pious land of Dravid.
In the second stanza she says that a woman has to pass through four stages. These four stages are (i) a young one (ii) the youth (ii) a grown-up one’ and (iv) an old one. Thereafter a human being is subject to decay. She says that the life of a woman passes through four stages. While describing the role of a woman, Amrita Pritam further says that a woman goes to a temple to worship God. In other words, a woman is being worshiped as a goddess in a temple. Sometimes she dwells in a palace. She leads a luxurious life there. At the same time, a woman leads the life of a prostitute. Not only this, sometimes she is being forced to live in a slum area. These are the roles of a woman. Her body resides in all of these above mentioned places since she is the daughter of the land of Dravid.
In the last stanza, Amrita Pritam has very beautifully described the position of a women in our society. She is of the opinion that earthly position of a woman is that she gets two different types of dealings. Sometimes a woman gets the red veil of honour. It means she is warmly welcomed and respected. On the other hand, she has to face a life of disgrace and dishonour. At last a she woman has to merge herself in the depths of her own existence since she is the daughter of this land of Dravid.

“आइ एम दी डॉटर ऑफ द लैंड ऑफ द्रविडा” अमृता प्रीतम द्वारा रचित एक विचारात्मक कविता है। अमृता प्रीतम ने उक्त कविता में विभिन्न परिस्थितियों एवं समयों में महिलाओं की विभिन्न भूमिकाओं की चर्चा की है। कविता व्यक्तिगत है। कवयित्री स्वयं इसमें एक पात्र है। प्रथम पाराग्राफ में वह कहती है कि उसके जीवन के दो पहलू हैं। वह ‘काम-कन्या’ और ‘काल-कन्या’ दोनों है।
‘काम-कन्या’ के रूप में वह प्रेम की पुत्री है और काल-कन्या के रूप में वह मृत्यु की पुत्री है। वह कहती है कि इस दुनिया में वह इन दो प्रकार के व्यक्तित्व को लेकर आयी है। ऐसा इसलिए कि वह द्रविड भूमि की बेटी है। इस प्रकार इस कविता के माध्यम से कवयित्री यह कहना चाहती है कि एक भारतीय महिला अपने जीवन में इन दो प्रकार की भूमिका निभाती है। पहली भूमिका वह एक रचनात्मक के रूप में निभाती है। वह प्रेम और आकर्षण का प्रतीक है। वह संतान को जन्म देती है और सम्पूर्ण परिवार की सेवा बड़ी ही कुशलता से करती है। वह अपने माता-पिता, पति, बच्चे एवं परिवार के अन्य सदस्यों को प्यार देती है। दूसरी ओर, कभी-कभी वह एक विध्वंशकारिणी की भूमिका अदा करती है। आवश्यकता पड़ने पर वह काली का रूप लेती है और दुष्टों एवं राक्षसों का सहार करती है। वे ऐसा इसलिए करती है क्योंकि वह द्रविड़ों की पवित्र भूमि की पुत्री है।
दूसरे पाराग्राफ में कवयित्री कहती है कि एक महिला चार चरणों से गुजरती है-बचपन, किशोरावस्था, जवानी एवं बुढ़ापा, उसके बाद व्यक्ति इस दुनिया से चला जाता है। आगे वह यह भी कहती है कि महिला चार प्रकार के जीवन जीती है। महिला की भूमिका का वर्णन करते हुए अमृता प्रीतम कहती है कि महिला मंदिर में पूजा करने जाती है, इतना ही नहीं वह देवी के रूप में मंदिरों में पूजी जाती है। कभी-कभी वह राजमहलों में रहती है और सुखी जीवन बिताती है। इनता ही नहीं, कोई-कोई महिला वेश्या का जीवन जीने को बाध्य होती है। और कभी-कभी वह गंदी बस्तिओं में जीवन जीने को बाध्य होती है। उसका जीवन उक्त चार प्रकारों के शरीर में पाया जाता है क्योंकि वह द्रविड़ भूमि की पुत्री है।
अतिम पराग्राफ में अमृता प्रीतम ने भारतीय समाज में महिलाओं की स्थिति पर प्रकाश डाला हैं उनके अनुसार महिलाओं के साथ दो प्रकार के व्यवहार किये जाते हैं। कभी-कभी महिला सम्मान के लाल चादर ओढ़ती है। दूसरी ओर, कभी-कभी उसे अपमान एवं अनादर का दंश झेलना पड़ता है। अंत में कवयित्री कहती है कि भारतीय महिलाओं को अपने अस्तित्व की लड़ाई लड़नी पड़ती है क्योंकि वह द्रविड़ भूमि की बेटी है।
