When we write or speak a sentence you have to make sure that the verb matches the subject. This is called verb agreement or concord.

You have already learned that the sentence has two parts – Subject and Predicate. The part that refers to a person or thing is called the subject, and the part that gives more information about the subject is called the predicate of the sentence.

However, difficulties can arise when we have a third–person subject, i.e., a noun or third–person pronoun. You have to decide whether it is singular or plural.

A subject can be

  • Singular – a book, an eraser
  • Plural – men, leaves
  • Uncountable – sugar, furniture
