In every sentence, the subject and the verb must agree in person (first, second or third) and number (singular or plural).
Examples:

  • She is drinking coffee.

Let us recall what we have learnt about subject-verb agreement.

1. In sentences beginning with an introductory there, the verb comes before the subject.
Examples:

  • There is a spider on the wall. (one/a spider – is)
  • There are many flowers blooming in the garden. (flowers are)
  • There has been an accident nearby. (one/an accident – has)
  • There were many books piled up on the table. (books were)

2. singular subject + and + singular subject = they – plural singular subject + and + plural subject = they – plural
Examples:

  • Sheela and Mahesh have arrived. (Sheela and Mahesh = they)
  • John and his friends are playing tennis. (John and his friends = they)

However, if: singular subject + and + singular subject = it/she/he singular

  • The director and producer of this film is Ajay.
  • The famous poet, philosopher and mathematician, Bill Roper, has come.

3. With or as well as: When two nouns or pronouns are joined by with or as well, the verb agrees with the first of them.
Examples:

  • Mary, with her cousins, has gone to the party. (Mary = her has)
  • They, as well as I, are excited about the picnic. (They are)

4. Words such as, each, either …, neither …, everyone, one, one of the, much, a little denote one = he/shelit so they take a singular verb.
Examples:

  • Each of the rooms of the hotel is clean.
  • Either of the shirts looks good.
  • Everyone/Each one deserves a medal.
  • One of my friends is unwell.
  • Neither the students nor the school was interested in the competition.
  • Every pen and every pencil is new.

5. Many, a few, several, both, all = they.
Examples:
a. Ma

  • my trees were planted.
  • A few books have been damaged.
  • Several students are protesting.
  • Both my sisters are doctors.
  • All his toys were broken.

6. Some nouns look like they are plural but actually denote only one item.
Example:

  • Malgudi Days is a famous work of R.K. Narayan. (one book = it)
