Today I had the bitterest experience of my life. I never had such an awful experience in my life before. I had gone to Agra for some urgent business. There were very few buses plying today as most of them had been put on election duty. I waited for two hours at the bus stop when the bus arrived, it was very crowded. I somehow managed to get some space for myself. It was really difficult to breathe. Everyone was sweating. People were pushing each other. After the journey of two hours, I came out of the bus and took a sigh of relief.

I’ll never forget this journey in my life.

Dear Diary,
It is that time of the year again, one that I wait for throughout the entire year — the summer vacations. I am so happy and I have so many plans this year. Today, I spent the entire day enjoying myself.

The best part of the day was that I did not have to get up early. My mind was relaxed, and the thought of getting up early, catching the school bus and attending the morning assembly was very far from my mind. My best friend and all my cousins were going to visit us today. So, there was a lot of commotion in the house. I knew that I was in for a treat. We would spend the day together playing games and making grand plans.

Jaggu, my aunt’s eldest son, especially is a master at this. He is always planning some kind of mischief, and we are all his minions at work. He is the creative head of our enterprise that takes huge pride in executing grand ideas. Today, he planned to organize a yard sale at the nearby park. I think he got that idea from some American movie. So, he told us to collect things from the house that we no longer needed, and bring it to the sale. The only condition was that the things ought to be in a mint state, otherwise who will buy things from a bunch of ‘kids’!

We all went around the house and picked up whatever we could lay our hands on. I took away my father’s wrist watch, while my cousin, Preeti, took Grandma’s new pair of spectacles. By the evening, we had an array of random things such as kitchen utensils, packets of salt and sugar, various kinds of clothes, bedsheets, phone chargers and even some marbles. Rohan wanted to sell his schoolbag and books. I wanted to do the same, but my parents would not have liked it. I think his wouldn’t either.

We all went to the park, and placed all our loot neatly on a bedsheet that we spread on the grass. Then, Jaggu began to call people’s attention using a loudspeaker that he had made out of a cardboard. It was fun. I could not believe the amount of money we were going to make. I was going to become a businessman when I grow up, I thought. We had even managed to sell my father’s wrist watch for twenty rupees to a neighbour. Suddenly, a huge crowd had gathered around us, and was studying the items on display. Soon, I heard a familiar voice telling me to pick everything up and go home. It was my grandfather. I don’t know what happened after that, but we all ran away helter skelter leaving everything in the park.

When grandfather returned, he called us all to his room. We were all dreading it. Then, he told us to gather around him, and told us that he had sold everything for us, and that we should not have run away. After all, we were doing such a good job. I couldn’t agree more. He gave each of us a fresh hundred-rupee-note and told us never to sell things to a stranger, but to him so that he could get us a good deal. We were ecstatic.

I am planning to enjoy my summer vacations by spending time with my cousins and friends. I just don’t want this time to end.
