These DAV Class 6 Science Notes and DAV Class 6 Science Chapter 14 Notes – Fabric from Fibre act as excellent revision resources, particularly in preparation for board exams.
Fabric from Fibre Class 6 DAV Notes
→ Fibre: A material which is in the form of thin strands is called fibre.
→ Yarn: Fibres are spun into long and continuous threads; called yarn.
→ Fabric: Yarn is knitted or woven to make fabric.
→ Natural Fibre: Fibres which are obtained from plants or animals are called natural fibre. Natural fibres are of two types, viz. animal fibre and plant fibre.
→ Animal fibre: Fibres which are obtained from animal are called animal fibres. Silk is obtained from the cocoon of silk moth. Wool is obtained from sheep, camel, yak, rabbit, etc.
→ Plant fibre: Fibres which are obtained from plants are called plant fibres. Cotton, jute and flex are plant fibres.
→ Artificial fibre: Man-made fibres are called artificial fibre, e.g. nylon, polyester, etc.
→ Cotton: Cotton is obtained from ripe fruit of cotton plant. The fruit of cotton is called cotton bolls.
→ Jute: Jute is obtained from stem of jute plants. Jute grows in alluvial soil. Jute is used in making gunny sacks, mats, bags, etc.
→ Coir: Coir is obtained from the outer shell of coconut. Coir is used in making ropes, carpets, rugs, etc.
→ Linen: Linen is obtained from fibres of the flax plant. It grows well in alluvial soil and in deep loams. Linen is used for making apron, bag, towel, bedsheet, apparels, etc.
→ Wool: Wool is obtained from hairs of sheep, camel, goat, etc. Sheep is the main source of wool.
→ Silk: Silk is obtained from cocoon of silk moth. Larvae of silk moth are reared on mulberry leaves. Cocoons are boiled in water, to separate the silk fibre.
→ Production of Cloth: Following are the main stages in production of cloth:
→ Collection of fibres: Fibres are collect by labourers from different sources.
→ Spinning: Making yarn from fibre is called spinning. In this process, fibres are twisted together. This can be done by hand-held spinning device or by a spinning machine.
→ Weaving: The process of making cloth from yarn is called weaving. More than one yarn is used in weaving.
→ Knitting: When only one yarn is used for making cloth, it is called knitting.
→ Dyeing: Colouring a fabric in different colours is called dyeing.
→ Printing: Sometimes, various patterns are printed on cloth; through printing.
→ Finishing: The printed cloth is made smooth, soft and shiny. This is done by some special treatments; called finishing.
→ Tailoring: The cloth is finally stitched by a tailor to make a dress.
→ Fibre: A material which is in the form of thin strands is called fibre.
→ Yarn: Y am is made by spinning the fibres.
→ Fabric: Fabric is made by weaving or knitting the yarn.
→ Ginning: Separating seeds and other impurities from cotton is called ginning.
→ Fleece: Sheep’s hair is called fleece.
→ Retting: Jute stems are kept immersed in water so that fibres can separate after rotting. This process is called retting.
