Meaning, Scope and Relevance of Social Science

What is Social Science?
1. Meaning of Social Science
Human beings are social by nature and live in families, communities, and larger groups throughout their lives. From childhood onward, they interact with classmates, friends, colleagues, and others, building relationships that support learning, growth, and cooperation.

People depend on one another for goods, services, livelihoods, and well-being through systems of demand and supply. They also share public resources such as roads, water, schools, hospitals, markets, and parks. Along with these resources, communities share ideas, languages, customs, beliefs, and responsibilities that strengthen social bonds and collective development.

Social Science is the systematic study of society and relationships, interactions and institutions such as governments, schools, markets, that shape human life.

It looks at how societies work and how institutions such as governments, schools, markets and laws affect social organisation.

2. The Scope of social science
The scope of Social Science includes the study of various aspects of human life and society. It covers economic activities such as trade, production, and markets, as well as social and cultural relationships within families and communities.

  • The concept of the Panchamahabhutas describes the natural world as an interconnected system in which human life is embedded.
  • The idea of the Panchamahabhutas (five great elements) comes from Indian philosophical traditions and explains the world as composed of “five fundamental elements- earth (Prithvi), water (Apah), fire (Agni), air (Vayu) and space (Akasha)”.
  • Scholars use this idea to explain natural processes the human body and the relationship between living beings and the environment.
  • While expressed in philosophical terms it represents an early attempt to understand nature as an interconnected system.
  • It also examines systems, institutions, and interactions that shape human behaviour, society, and development.
  • Social Science is a discipline that integrates several disciplines like History, Geography, Economics, Political Science, etc., which studies various facets of society

Social Sciences chiefly consists of two broad areas.
i. Relationships Between People and Ideas- Social science is the study of how people interact with other people.
It comprises:

  • The study of ideals like liberty, equality, fraternity, secularism, liberalism, linguistic diversity and several other ideals governing the human relations in a society,

ii. Systems and Institutions—It additionally examines organised frameworks that govern society.

  • The idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning ‘the world is one family’, expresses the interconnectedness of human societies across regions and cultures.
  • This sense of interdependence lies at the core of what Social Science seeks to understand when it studies global interactions and relationships.

These include:

  1. Governments
  2. Laws and courts
  3. Schools
  4. Police
  5. Markets and banks
  6. Local bodies

These institutions are helpful in Allocating resources, Safeguarding entitlements and responsibilities offering services to the public taking policy from formulation to execution.

The Arthashastra attributed to Kautilya composed about 2,300 years ago, examined administration, economic management, taxation, and the duties of rulers toward their people. Such works show that systematic thinking about governance and the economy existed long before modern academic disciplines developed.

Area of Social Science studies

3. Approach of Social Science as a Field of Study
It is a framework for analysis of society in an organised manner. One does not rely on personal bias but encourages interrogating and collecting information and evidences.
It focuses on:

  1. Observation
  2. Investigation
  3. Comparison

These skills help to critically:

  1. Assess patterns
  2. Understand social events and processes
  3. Explain why situations occur, their causes and their effects

Understanding Social Science Class 9 Notes SST Chapter 1-2
Thus, Social Science enables to develop an understanding of how societies operate, how social institutions develop and how human actions and decisions shape the world we live in.

The systematic study of human society and the interactions between individuals and organisations, social institutions and society is known as Social Science. It provides an interdisciplinary understanding of society and its functions by incorporating material from the fields of geography, history, political science and economics. Understanding the world, the various issues facing human society and engaging in it as responsible and compassionate citizens are at the ‘ core of social science education.

The Four Disciplines

Geography
Study of the Earth as a human home and their interaction with their immediate surroundings is the basic objective of this discipline.

It not only examines how people live across the globe and utilise the resources for agriculture, industry and livelihoods, but also reveals physical characteristics like landforms, rivers, climate, soils, forests and natural resources.

Thematic studies of population distribution, farming methods, settlement patterns and trade activities are made and explained by geography.

Environmental issues like deforestation, droughts,- floods and climate change are not only highlighted but sustainable development and responsible usage of natural resources are emphasised by this discipline.

Geography proves itself to be important for disaster management, environmental conservation and the planning and allocation of resources with an aim of achieving maximum utilisation and least wastage. It is very helpful because geographers use tools like maps, satellite photos and remote sensing to study the planet and track environmental changes.

History
History can be identified as the study of the past, systematic and chronological arrangement of past events.

It leads to the development of an understanding of how societies develop and change over time. Literary Sources, Archaeological Sources, Epigraphic Sources, Numismatic Sources are important in helping us understand and reconstruct history.

It is known to record social and cultural developments, important events and movements of important people only, but historians over the years grew curious about the lives of the common folks and have made efforts to uncover truths about their living and dwelling.

Present-day institutions, traditions and political systems have been established after long historical processes, e.g., the ideas of equality, justice and rights basically came up during India’s freedom struggle and influenced the making of the Indian Constitution.

It has shown us that appreciating cultures contributes to the development of society. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that History results in the present and guides the future.

Political Science
Political Science focuses on the governance of societies. Government machinery, institutions, laws, policies and the relationship between the state and citizens are studied and developed.

This discipline examines why societies need rules, the making and implementation of laws, functioning of governments at local, state and national levels.

It enables people to understand their rights and duties as citizens and the importance of democratic processes and public decision-making. Political Science is about the everyday life of citizens and how public services, development programmes and legal protections become part of governance.

Understanding Social Science Class 9 Notes SST Chapter 1

By studying Political Science, individuals develop awareness about democracy, equality before law and the need for inclusive governance that protects the rights of all citizens.

Economics
The word “economics” comes from a Greek! word oikonomia, which means “household management.” This term is a combination of oikos (meaning “house” or “household”) j and nomos (meaning “rules,” “law” or “management”)

The economy is about how people produce, distribute and allocate resources in order to fulfil their needs. Economic activities at different levels, from households and small businesses to national and global economies, are studied and compared to formulate plans and schemes for development of the country on the economic front.

Focus of Economic Study
In economics researchers try to find out:

  1. How people get their livelihoods?
  2. How markets work?
  3. How prices are established?
  4. How governments plan the management of resources for development?

Importance of Studying Economics Studying economics helps to:

  1. Make informed choices
  2. Understand market trends
  3. Develop policies for sustainable and inclusive economic development

Poverty, unemployment, economic growth and the fair distribution of wealth are monitored and studied under this discipline.

It also helps individuals understand how financial decisions impact households, businesses and the overall economy.

Over the next two years, you will study the foundations of the Indian economy, markets and prices, financial management and entrepreneurship, economic growth and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), international trade, and the Union Budget.

Interconnections of the Disciplines
Many real-life issues require ideas from different Social Science subjects. For example, urban floods can be understood through:

Geography Rainfall, rivers, drainage
History Development of the city, past land use
Economics Damage to livelihoods, rebuilding costs
Political Science Government planning, disaster management
  1. Geography helps us understand things like rainfall, rivers and how water drains.
  2. History acquaints us with the land use pattern.
  3. Economics looks at how people’s lives are affected and how much it costs to rebuild and recover.
  4. Political Science helps us to understand government plans, rules and how they handle disasters.
  5. We need to use Geography to understand rainfall patterns and also use History to see how places developed.
  6. Also, Economics and Political Science provide insights, into livelihoods and government policies.

Guiding Values of Social Science
Social Science promotes values that guide responsible citizenship and help build a fair society. Four key values are Diversity, Inclusivity, Sustainability and Equity, which are also reflected in the ideals of the Indian Constitution such as justice, equality and respect for all.

Understanding Social Science Class 9 Notes SST Chapter 1

Diversity
Diversity refers to the variety of languages, religions, cultures and traditions within a society. India is a diverse country where people from different backgrounds live together and share institutions and public spaces. Understanding diversity helps students respect differences and recognise them as a strength. The Constitution protects this diversity by guaranteeing cultural and religious freedoms.

Inclusivity
Inclusivity means ensuring that all individuals and groups are able to participate in social, economic and political life. It encourages equal opportunities regardless of caste, gender, religion or economic status. In India, policies that promote equal access to education and public services reflect the constitutional commitment to equality and dignity for all citizens.

Sustainability
Sustainability refers to the responsible use of natural resources so that development today does not harm future generations. Social Science helps us understand how human activities affect the environment and why conservation is important. Environmental protection laws and the constitutional duty to protect nature highlight the importance of sustainability.

Understanding Social Science Class 9 Notes SST Chapter 1

Equity
Equity means fairness in providing opportunities and resources. It recognises that some groups may require additional support to overcome historical disadvantages. In India, policies aimed at reducing inequality reflect the constitutional goal of social justice and ensure that development benefits all sections of society.

Why these values matter? These values matter because living together requires understanding and responsibility. They help us examine real problems such as discrimination, unequal access to services, environmental damage and poverty with sensitivity as well as clear reasoning. They also guide us towards decisions that are fair, inclusive and sustainable, in line with constitutional ideals.

Social Science comprises not just a set of four separate subjects, but a connected way of understanding real-life problems.

  1. Social Science studies human behaviour, relationships and institutions in society.
  2. It includes disciplines such as History, Geography, Political Science and Economics and helps in understanding diversity, social relations and inclusivity.
  3. It helps analyse production, work, income and development.
  4. Governance: Explains how governments function and how decisions affect citizens. Social issues require multiple disciplines together.

Understanding Social Science from an Indian Perspective

Understanding Social Science from an Indian Point of View

  1. Social Science is about studying human society and the issues it examines are shaped by a nation’s history, geography, economy and governance.
  2. Studying Social Science from an Indian perspective means understanding India through its unique experiences, diversity and constitutional values.

India has deep cultural diversity shaped by many historical processes and regional traditions since ancient ages.

Despite these differences people share institutions and public spaces accepting this diversity and treating all communities with respect and dignity which is important for peace and harmony in India.

India’s power sharing arrangement between the Union government, state governments and local bodies also helps in maintaining participation and strengthening India’s identity as a federal and democratic nation.

Local institutions such as Panchayati Raj and municipalities ensure that development reaches the smallest communities in India. They make governance efficient for all people.

Understanding Social Science Class 9 Notes SST Chapter 1

The Indian Constitution guides life in India through the ideals of Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, influencing laws, policies and efforts to reduce discrimination and protect rights.

India’s history has an impact on the way things are today. The fight for freedom made people think about democracy, rights and being able to govern themselves, which is still important for the country’s institutions today.

Indian Economics perspective helps us understand how economic policies and development programmes influence people’s lives. It explains issues such as poverty, employment, agriculture, industrial growth, and sustainable development. It allows to critically analyse ,how economic decisions affect society and national progress. Initiatives like Digital India, Make in India, and ‘renewable energy projects have created jobs, improved livelihoods, and supported sustainable economic growth.

India is facing a lot of problems because of the environment so the country wants to make sure that the economy grows in a way that does not hurt the environment. This means saving resources and using energy from sources like the sun and wind.

Understanding Social Science Class 9 Notes SST Chapter 1

The governments, decisions about the environment, the economy and how the country is run affect everyone, so we need to look at all these things. Social Science helps us understand how all these things are connected and think about how India can develop and what its future will be like.

Conservation of resources, promoting renewable energy and protecting water resources have become necessary for long-term development in India.

An Indian perspective highlights that economic progress cannot be achieved without accommodating diversity and promoting peaceful and harmonious living.

Policies related to environment, economy and governance have a huge impact on all sections of society. Therefore, these areas must be carefully studied together.

Thus, studying Social Science from an Indian perspective helps us understand the connections, between history, diversity, governance, economy and environment.
It prepares citizens to think critically about the development and future of India.

It is necessary to integrate history, society, economy, environment and governance in order to comprehend India.

  1. India’s history, languages, religions and local customs have all influenced the country’s rich cultural diversity.
  2. Local, state and federal governments share authority.
  3. Sustainability and environmental preservation should be balanced with economic expansion.
  4. India’s governance and development path were influenced by colonial rule and the freedom struggle.
