Orienting Yourself The Use of Coordinates Class 9 Short Question Answer
Question 1.
In the given figure of a circle, write the coordinates of the points where circle meets the axes.

Solution:
Let the circle meet OX at A and OX’ at A’. Then.
A → (4, 0)
A’ → (- 4, 0)
Let the circle meet OY at B and OY’ at B’. Then.
B → (0,4)
B’ → (0, – 4)
Question 2.
Write coordinates of two points on x-axis and two points on y-axis which arc at equal distances from the origin.
Solution:
The coordinates of two points on x-axis which are at equal distances from the origin can be taken as (1. 0) and (- 1, 0).
The coordinates of two points on v-axis which arc at equal distances from the origin can be taken as (0, 1) and (0, – 1).
Question 3.
If the coordinates of two poins are P(- 2, 3) and Q(- 3, 5). then find (abscissa of P) — (abscissa of Q).
Solution:
(abscissa of P) – (abscissa of Q)
= (- 2) – (- 3)
= – 2 + 3
= 1
Question 4.
Plot the point P(-5, 1) and from it draw PM and PN perpendiculars to x-axis and y-axis respectively. Write the coordinates of M and N.
Solution:

M → (-5, 0)
N → (0, 1)
Question 5.

Solution:
X → (4, 0)
Y → (4, 3)
Z → (-2, 0)
W → (-2, 4)

Question 6.
With the help of distance formula, show that the points A(4, 2), B(7, 5) and C(9, 7) do not form a triangle.
Solution:
We have
A → (4, 2)
B → (7, 5)
C → (9, 7)
Using distance formula,
AB = \(\sqrt{(7-4)^2+(5-2)^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{(3)^2+(3)^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{9+9}=\sqrt{18}\)
= \(\sqrt{9 \times 2}=3 \sqrt{2}\)
BC = \(\sqrt{(9-7)^2+(7-5)^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{4+4}=\sqrt{8}\)
= \(\sqrt{4 \times 2}=2 \sqrt{2}\)
CA = \(\sqrt{(4-9)^2+(2-7)^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{(-5)^2+(-5)^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{25+25}=\sqrt{50}\)
= \(\sqrt{25 \times 2}=5 \sqrt{2}\)
We find that
AB + BC = 3√2 + 2√2
= (3 + 2)√2
= 5√2 = CA
⇒ The points A. B and C are collincar.
⇒ The points A. B and C do not form a triangle.
Question 7.
If the point P(A: -1, 2) is equidistant from the points A(3, k) and B(k, 5). find the values of k.
Solution:
We have,
P → (- 1, 2)
A → (3, k)
B → (k, 5)
PA = PB
∵ P is equidistant from A and B
⇒ PA2 = PB2
∴ (3 – (k – 1))2 + (k – 2)2 = (k – (k – 1))2 + (5 – 2)2
⇒ (3 – k+ 1)2 + (k – 2)2 = (k – k + 1)2 + 32
⇒ (4 – k)2 + (k – 2)2 = 1 + 9
⇒ 16 + k2 – 8k + k2 + 4 – 4k – 10
⇒ 2k2 – 12k + 10 = 0
Dividing by 2, k2 – 6k + 5 = 0
⇒ k2 – 5k – k + 5 = 0
⇒ k(k – 5) – 1(k – 5) = 0
⇒ (k – 5) (k – 1) = 0
Either k – 5 = 0 or k – 1 = 0
i. e., k = 5 or k = 1.
Question 8.
The coordinates of the vertices of ΔABC are A(7, 2), B(9, 10) and C(1, 4). If E and F are the mid-points of AB and AC respectively, prove that EF = \(\frac{1}{2}\)BC
Solution:
We have,
A → (7, 2)
B → (9,10)
C → (1,4)
E is the mid-point of AB
E → \(\left(\frac{7+9}{2}, \frac{2+10}{2}\right)\) [By mid-point formula]
⇒ E → (8, 6)

∵ F is the mid-point of AC
∴ F → \(\frac{1}{2}\)
⇒ F → (4, 3)
Now,
EF = \(\sqrt{(4-8)^2+(3-6)^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{16+9}\)
= \(\sqrt{25}\) = 5 ……….(1)
and BC = \(\sqrt{(1-9)^2+(4-10)^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{64+36}\)
= \(\sqrt{100}\) = 10 ….(2)
From (1) and (2)
EF = \(\frac{1}{2}\)BC.
Question 9.
If the point (x, y) is equidistant from the points (a – b, a + b) and (a + b, a + b), prove that x – a = 0.
Solution:
Let P → (x, y)
A → (a – b, a + b)
and B → (a + b, a + b)
According to the question,
PA = PB
⇒ PA2 = PB2
⇒ (x – (a – b)2 + (y – (a + b)2 = (x – (a + b))2 + (y – (a + b))2
⇒ (x – (a – b))2 = (x – (a + b))2
⇒ x2 + (a – b)2 – 2x(a – b) = x2 + (a + b)2 -2x (a + b)
⇒ a2 + b2 – 2ab – 2xa + 2xb = a2 + b2 + 2ab – 2xa – 2xb
⇒ – 2ab + 2xb = 2ab – 2xb
Transposing 4 xb = 4ab
Dividing both sides by 4b, x = a
i.e., x – a = 0.
