Class 9 Ganita Manjari Chapter 2 Extra Questions

Question 1.
What will be the coefficient of y2 in the polynomial 5y + 3y2 – y + y2 + 5 ?
Solution:
5y3 + 3y2 – y + y2 + 5 = 5y3 + 3y2 + y2 – y + 5
= 5y + 4y2 – y + 5
Term containing y2 = 4y2
∴ Coefficient of y2 = 4

Question 2.
What is the degree of the polynomial
p(x) = 2x + \(\frac{3}{2}\)x3 – 7?
Solution:
Term with highest power of x = \(\frac{3}{2}\)x3
Exponent of x in this term = 3
∴ Degree of the polynomial = 3.

Question 3.
Write the degree of the polynomial
(x3 + 5) (4 – x ).
Solution:
(x3 + 5) (4 – x5)
= x3(4 – x5) + 5(4 – x5)
= 4x3 – x8 + 20 – 5x5
Term with highest power of x = – x8;
Exponent of x in this term = 8
Degree of the polynomial = 8.

Question 4.
If P(x) = 5x – 4x2 + 3, find P(- 1)
Solution:
P(x) = 5x – 4x2 + 3
P(- 1) = 5(- 1) – 4(-1)2 + 3
= – 5 – 4 + 3
= -9 + 3
= -6

Introduction to Linear Polynomials Class 9 Very Short Question Answer

Question 5.
Find the value of f(x) = 3x2 – 5x + 3 at x = – 2.
Solution:
f(x) = 3x2 – 5x + 3
⇒ f(-2) = 3(-2)2 – 5(-2) + 3
= 12 + 10 + 3
= 25

Question 6.
If P(x) = x3 + x + x + 1, find f(- 1) + p(1).
Solution:
P(x) = x3 + x + x + 1
∴ P(-1) = (-1)3 + (-1)2 + (-1) + 1
= -1 + 1 – 1 + 1
= 0
and P(1) = (1)3 + (1)2 + (1) + 1
= 1 + 1 + 1 + 1
= 4
∴ p(-1) + p(1) = 0 + 4
= 4

Question 7.
Find the value of p\(\left(-\frac{2}{3}\right)\) for
p(y) = 2y3 – y2 – 13y – 6.
Solution:
p(y) = 2y3 – y2 – 13y – 6
⇒ p\(\left(-\frac{2}{3}\right)\) = 2\(\left(-\frac{2}{3}\right)^3\) – \(\left(\frac{-2}{3}\right)^2\) – 13\(\left(\frac{-2}{3}\right)\) – 6
= \(-\frac{16}{27}-\frac{4}{9}+\frac{26}{3}\) – 6
= \(\frac{-16-12+234-162}{27}=\frac{44}{27}\)

Question 8.
If p(x) = x2 – 4x + 3, evaluate p(2) – p(- 1) + p(\(\frac{1}{2}\))
Solution:
p(x) = x2 – 4x + 3
∴ p(2) = (2)2 – 4(2) + 3
= 4 – 8 + 3
= – 1

p(- 1) = (- 1)2 – 4(- 1) + 3
= 1 + 4 + 3
= 8

and P(\(\frac{1}{2}\)) = (\(\frac{1}{2}\))2 – 4((\(\frac{1}{2}\))) + 3
= \(\frac{1}{4}\) – 2 + 4
= \(\frac{5}{4}\)
∴ p(2) – p(-1) + p(\(\frac{1}{2}\))
= -1 – 8 + \(\frac{5}{4}\)
= –\(\frac{31}{4}\)

Question 9.
If x = – 2 is the root of the equation √2 (x + p) = 0 and is also the zero of the polynomial px2 + kx + 2√2, then find the value of k.
Solution:
If x = – 2 is the root of the equation √2 (x + p) = 0, then,
√2 (— 2 + p)== 0 ⇒ -2 + p = 0 ⇒ p = 2
Let f(x) = px2 + kx + 2√2
Then, f(x) = 2x2 + kx + 2√2
If x = – 2 is a zero of/(x), then f(- 2) = 0
⇒ 2(- 2)2 + k(- 2) + 2√2 = 0
⇒ 8 – 2k + 2√2 = 0
⇒ 2k = 8 + 2√2
⇒ k = 4 + V2 .

Question 10.
Check whether the polynomial p(y) = 4y3 + 4y2 – y – 1 is a multiple of (2y + 1).
Solution:
p(y) = 4y3 + 4y2 – y – 1
2y + 1 = 0 ⇒ y = –\(\frac{1}{2}\)
Now,
p(-\(\frac{1}{2}\)) = 4(-\(\frac{1}{2}\))3 + 4(-\(\frac{1}{2}\))2 – (-\(\frac{1}{2}\)) – 1
= –\(\frac{1}{2}\) + 1 + \(\frac{1}{2}\) – 1 = 0
∴ By factor theorem, (2y + 1) is a factor of p(y), i.e., p(y) is a multiple of (2y + 1).

Introduction to Linear Polynomials Class 9 Short Question Answer

Question 1.
If f(x) = 5x2 – 4x + 5, find f(1) + f(- 1) + f(0).
Solution:
f(x) = 5x2 – 4x + 5
∴ f(1) =5(1)2 – 4(1) + 5 = 5 – 4 + 5 = 6
f(-1) = 5(-1) – 4(-1) + 5 = 5 + 4 + 5 = 14
f(0) = 5(0)2 – 4(0) + 5 = 0 – 0 + 5 = 5
∴ f(1) + f(-1) + f(0) = 6 + 14 + 5 = 25

Question 2
Find the value of the polynomial x2 – 9 for x = 97.
Solution:
x2 – 9 = x2 – 32 = (x – 3)(x + 3)
Using Identity III
= (97 – 3)(97 + 3)
= (94)(100)
= 9400

Question 3.
If x + \(\frac{1}{x}\) = 4, find the value of x3 + \(\frac{1}{x^3}\).
Solution:
We know that
(x + \(\frac{1}{x}\))3 = x3 + \(\frac{1}{x^3}\) + 3(x)(\(\frac{1}{x}\))(x + \(\frac{1}{x}\))
⇒ (x + \(\frac{1}{x}\))3 = x3 + \(\frac{1}{x^3}\) + 3(x + \(\frac{1}{x}\))
⇒ (4)3 = x3 + \(\frac{1}{x^3}\) + 3(4)
⇒ 64 = x3 + \(\frac{1}{x^3}\) + 12
⇒ x3 + \(\frac{1}{x^3}\) = 64 – 12
⇒ x3 + \(\frac{1}{x^3}\) = 52
