For the past 15 years, he has been the link between this post office and the people served by it. Defying the harsh weather conditions, he served the people living in the hamlets or dhaanis of this area. For some deliveries, he had to travel 20 kilometres on foot carrying his heavy mail bag. The role of the Gramin Dak Sewak is invaluable since they deliver post to people in inaccessible areas. India Post also plays the role of a bank accepting the savings of people.

For the Gramin Dak Sewak, this job serves a much-needed second source of livelihood. Akaal or famine is a way of life in the desert regions of Rajasthan. The one crop of bajra that Khetaram gets from his field is not enough to feed his family. The regular income from this job helps him to survive.

प्रथम अनुच्छेद में बताया गया है कि आधुनिक तेज़ डिजिटल संचार और पहले की डाक प्रणाली की तुलना से आरंभ होता है, जब डाक डाकिया द्वारा पहुँचायी जाती थी। उन्हें ग्रामीण डाक सेवक (GDS) कहा जाता था और यह ही बिखरे हुये परिवारों और समुदायों के मध्य एक महत्वपूर्ण कड़ी थे। खेताराम नामक एक ग्रामीण डाक सेवक था जो पिछले 15 वर्षों से सोमराड़ शाखा डाकघर में अकेले डाकिया के रूप में कार्य करता था। वह रेतीले टीलों और रेगिस्तान में 28 किलोग्राम तक डाक बैग पैदल ही लेकर चलता था। जब 50 डिग्री तापमान तथा भीषण गर्मी होती थी, तो भी जोधपुर से चली डाक 24 घंटों में ही सीमावर्ती क्षेत्रों में पहुँच जाती थी। अत्यंत गर्मी से बचने के लिये वह कभी-कभी डाक वितरण कार्य सूर्यास्त तक देरी से करता था।
पहले इन्हें वितरण कर्मी के नाम से जानते थे, ग्रामीण डाक सेवक (GDS) लद्दाख के जमे हुये रेंगिस्तान, लक्षद्वीप टापू और उत्तर-पूर्व के नदीय समुदायों जैसे कठिन स्थानों पर भी सेवा देते थे। उनका कार्य अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि ये उन अंदरूनी क्षेत्रों तक डाक पहुँचाते हैं, जहाँ अन्य साधनों से पहुँचना कठिन होता है, वहाँ पर केवल पैदल ही जाया जा सकता है। स्वतंत्रता के बाद भारत की पूरी आबादी अब डाक सेवा के दायरे में है। आज पूरे देश में डेढ़ लाख से अधिक डाकघर कार्यरत हैं।

यह हिस्सा इस ओर इशारा करता है कि GDS (जी.डी.एस.) उनकी कमाई का दूसरा साधन है। उन्हें केवल एक दिन में पाँच घंटे ही कार्य करना होता है। उन्हें 65 वर्ष की आयु तक कार्य करने की सहूलियत भी है। खेताराम ग्रामीण डाक सेवक के रूप में कार्यरत है और इसी ने उसे जीवन का एक नया अनुबंध दिया है। अकाल-ग्रस्त क्षेत्र होने के कारण, उसके पाँच सदस्यों का परिवार इसी नौकरी पर आश्रित है। डाकघर पर लोगों का बहुत भारी विश्वास है क्योंकि वे इसी की सहायता से अपने रिश्तेदारों और अन्य लोगों से मनी-ऑर्डर प्राप्त करते हैं। खेताराम का गर्मजोशी से स्वागत होता है। वह किसी भी घर की दहलीज़ पर पत्र पढ़ सकता है और उनका उत्तर लिख सकता है। लोग उस पर दयालु हैं और उसे गुड़ की ढली (टुकड़ा) भेंट करते हैं, जब वह किसी के जन्म अथवा शादी की खबर उन्हें देता है। परन्तु वह बहुत दु:खी होता है जब उसे किसी की मृत्यु का समाचार देता है। इस खबर को लिफाफे के एक फटे कोने से जाना जाता है। अत्यंत ही कठिन परिस्थितियों में भी खेताराम कार्य करके प्रसन्न है।
अब वह एक ग्रामीण संचार सेवक बनने की तीव्रता से प्रतीक्षा में है क्योंकि फोन-लाइन उससे केवल 50 किलोमिटर दूर शेष है। तब वह एक सैलफोन लेकर और डाक लेकर एक घरं से दूसरे घर तक जायेगा।
अतः खेताराम जैसे लोग हमारे सामाजिक ताने-बाने के हिस्सा हैं। वे वास्तव में एक अत्यंत ही महान सहायक है। हमें खेताराम जैसे लोगों का अभिवादन करना चाहिए जो ग्रामीण सोसाइटी का एक आवश्यक अंग हैं और ये ही लोग अपनी सेवा द्वारा मानव संबंधों को मज़बूती प्रदान करते हैं।
