South Delhi Murder Poem Summary in English and Hindi by Tabish Khair

South Delhi Murder Written by Tabish Khair Introduction to the Poem

Tabish Khair studied up to M.A. in Gaya. He is pained to see that Bihar and Biharis no longer enjoy a good reputation in many parts of the country, Biharis are honest and hard-working people. But many poor Biharis work as domestic help. In some cases, it was found that Bihari servants killed their employers and made away with their valuables. The act of a few of them brought a bad name to Bihar and Biharis. Whenever an incident of murder or robbery is committed, the finger of suspicion is pointed at the Bihari servant without any proof or investigation. This prejudice prevails in the Delhi people and police alike.
‘South Delhi Murder’ highlights this attitude of the police and the people.

South Delhi Murder Poem Summary in English

An old couple lived alone in a flat. Their sons were in America. They did their duty to their parents just by sending them valuable presents.

One day a neighbour saw a red fluid spilled from behind the closed door of the old couple. For three days, she believed that the red fluid was red ink or nail polish. But then she noticed that the fluid had dried but the flies buzzed over it. Then she realised it was blood. She rang up the police.

She told her neighbour Mrs Guha about the old couple’s servant Shyam. He was a Bihari. He looked innocent. She found it hard to believe that such an innocent boy could have murdered the old couple. But appearances could be deceptive.

A police officer came with two constables. They broke open the door and went in. The old man had been stabbed and the old woman had been killed with iron rods.

It was a neat job as if the operation was done by professionals. The way the couple had been killed, the police officer could immediately tell that it was the job of a Nepali boy or a Bihari chhokra. It was presumed that in the dead of night when the streets of Delhi are deserted and quiet, Shyam’s accomplices would have come. Shyam would have unlocked the door for them. Then they killed the couple and made away with the valuables. Almost every valuable thing was missing. But they had left the laptop behind. Probably the illiterate Biharis did not know anything about computers. They did not know that laptop was also valuable.

Nabbing Shyam was not difficult at all. His address had been noted. He belonged to a small village in Bihar. The police also got his photo from a film in which he was seen carrying a tray at a party.

When the police caught Shyam, he had only fifty rupees and a sari which he had bought for his mother.

Shyam with fifty rupees on him nabbed in the village and a sari for his mother.

Meaning of the stanza: The unborn female child once again tells her mother to look for her and look for the place she has sent her. This unspeakable child must be looked for. She looks for the place that can never be described.
She addresses her mother and look for what she had done. This thing has been done without the disposal and will of God. The unborn girl was like a gas with no colour and a strong smell, used mixed with water to preserve things in the laboratory. The girl wishes to have a look on her and her sin. She again and again tells her to realise her great mistakes as well as a great crime.

He does so to prepare his land for cultivation. His body was very strong. His shoulders resembled the soil on the boats or ships. The horse were well within his control. The horses became ready to work even if he directs them in a slow voice.

Second Stanza:
An expert. He would set the wing
And fit the bright steel-pointed sock.
The sod rolled over without breaking.

Third Stanza:
Of reins, the sweating team turned round
And back into the land. His eye
Narrowed and angled at the ground,
Mapping the furrow exactly.

The farmer with his horses was labouring hard. While ploughing, he and his horses very successfully turned round and came back to the land. The eyes of the farmer were concentrated on the ground. He did so to ensure that it was done properly. Here “narrowed and angled” mean to concentrate over the movement of the horses and the work done. The farmer was mapping of the land line very minutely. “Mapping” means the survey of the surface where the work was going on. Here it means the supervision and observation of the ploughing.

Fourth Stanza:

Fell sometimes on the polished sod;
Sometimes he rode me on his back
Dipping and rising to his plod.

Meaning of the Stanza: Here in this stanza the speaker is describing what he was doing in his farm when his father was ploughing the land. The speaker is the son of the farmer. He was a young child. The child was playing and making merry. Sometimes he stumbled in his father’s hob-nailed wake; sometimes he fell on the slippery grass-land. Sometimes his father rode him on his back. Again the child was dipping and rising to his father’s moving steps.

Fifth Stanza;
I wanted to grow up and plough,
To close one eye, stiffen my arm.
All I ever did was follow
In his broad shadow round the farm.

Meaning of the Stanza: The child wanted to grow up and plough the land. He thought so to help his father. He remembers his childhood when his father was labouring hard day and night. He has given entire affection to his son. He had done everything what his son asked for in his childhood. The son wants to become the follower of his father because he has become a young man under his shadow. Now he wants to relieve his father from all his duties and responsibilities.

Sixth Stanza:
I was a nuisance, tripping, falling,
Yapping always. But today
It is my father who keeps stumbling
Behind me, and will not go away

Stumbling (to walk slowly) = धीरे-धीरे चलना ।

Meaning of the Stanza: In the last stanza the speaker repents. He thinks that in his childhood he was a nuisance. He was tripping and falling. He was talking a lot about nothing significant. But today he is young. He has taken all the duties and responsibilities of his father. He has undertaken the work that his father was doing in the past. Now, his father remains behind him and guides him in his work.

The Lamentation of The Old Pensioner Summary in English

“The Lamentation of the Old Pensioner” which is revised version of Yeats earlier poem, ‘The old Pensioner’ presents the poet’s reminiscences of his young life which becomes more agonising when he looks at his present state and contrasts his time of youth with his state in the old age. The poet in his youthfulness enjoyed more with his wife and friends. Sitting near the fire with his family or friends he always talked about love and politics. Now in the old age he has become alone. No one sees or talks with him.

Love for beauty is still present in his heart. He has a greater attraction for his past life.

Everybody neglects him like the broken tree which has become fruitless and flowerless now. Time has transfigured him. So he hates it (the time). He says “I spit into the face of Time, that has transfigured me”.

The Lamentation of The Old Pensioner Poem Hindi Translation

First Stanza:
Although I shelter from the rain
Under a broken tree
My chair was nearest to the fire
In every company
That talked of love or politics,
Ere Time transfigured me.

Meaning of the Stanza: The speaker sat nearest to the fire, under the broken tree in every company that discussed about love and politics. But time has disfigured him and so he keeps away from this company though he still takes shelter under a broken tree to save himself from the rain.
The speaker expresses his agony over the change of time which has disfigured him. He has lost his attractive appearance.

Second Stanza:
Though lads are making pikes again
For some conspiracy,
And crazy rascals rage their fill
At human tyranny,
My contemplations are of Time
That has transfigured me.

Time = समय, अवधि ।

Meaning of the Stanza: The speaker says that some notorious young persons are making some sharp pointed weapons. They have planned to use it for the victimization of good people. He deeply thinks over human torture by them. He also realizes that time has completely changed his appearance.
The speaker is highly disappointed to see the inhuman deeds performed by some nasty young men. He is also disperated that time has transfigured him and now he has nothing but contemplating over the matter.

Third Stanza:
There’s not a woman turns her face
Upon a broken tree.
And yet the beauties that I loved
Are in my memory;
I spit into the face of Time
That has transfigured me.

Meaning of the Stanza : The speaker remembers the days when he was quite young. He had loved beauties around him specially women. Now not a single woman likes to see him because he has become old. He is looking like a broken tree. As such he hates Time now because it has transfigured him. It has changed his appearance. He is so much disgusted with the misdeeds of Time that he spits on its face.
The speaker expresses his frustration in this stanza over the cruel act of Time. He has personified ‘Time’ here.

Sweetest Love I Do Not Goe Summary in English and Hindi by John Donne

Sweetest Love I Do Not Goe by John Donne About the Poet

John Donne studied both at Oxford and Cambridge and he became a lawyer. He was secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton. He secretly married Lady Egerton’s niece and was dismissed from service. In 1615 he took Anglican orders and preached sermons. Donne has been described as a metaphysical poet. His poetry is characterised by wit and far-fetched ideas.

Sweetest Love I Do Not Goe Written by John Donne Introduction

This poem was written by Donne on the occasion of his leaving for Germany. He wrote it to console his wife and it is one of his simplest poems. He tells his wife that he loves her and will return soon. So she should not sigh and shed tears because it will make his voyage dangerous. He says her sighs are like wind on the high seas. Her tears are like rain. He tells her that she does not love him, as she says she does, if she wastes his life in her love.

Sweetest Love I Do Not Goe Summary in English

The poet is going to Germany leaving his wife behind. She is very sad to part with him. He consoles his wife. He says, “Sweetest love, I’m not going because I’m tired of you, nor in the hope that I’ll find a better love out there, but since I will eventually die, it’s best to amuse myself by dying feigned deaths.

Last night the sun went down and yet he’s here again today. He’s got no desire or feeling like me, nor half as short a journey, so don’t worry about me, but please believe I’ll make quicker journeys because I’ve got more incentives than him.

Oh how feeble man’s power is, that if good luck happens he can’t add another hour or recall a lost one. But when bad luck comes, we strengthen it, lengthen it and beautify it, so that it marches over us.

When you sigh, you don’t sigh air, you sigh my soul away; when you weep, both kind and cruel, my life’s blood decays. It can’t be true that you love me, like you say, if you, who is the better of me, lay waste my life in yours.

Don’t let your prophetic heart foresee me ill in case destiny takes your place and fulfills your fears; instead think of us as merely turned aside to sleep. Those who keep one another’s memory alive are never parted.”

India Through A Traveller’s Eyes Summary in English

India had always been part of the background of my life, but I had never seen, it whole and for myself until now. Yet the stories that our Indian family doctor and his wife told me when I was child had woven themselves into my growing dreams, and I had long read everything that I could find about that country from my father I had learned of it through Buddhism and the life history of the Lord Buddha.

When did I go to India to see, not the Taj Mahal, although I did see it any by moonlight, not Fatehpur Sikri, although I did see it, and not the glories of empire in New Delhi, although I did see them. I want to see India, to see and listen to two groups of people, the young intellectuals in the cities and the peasants in the villages. There I met in little room in the city, in little houses in the villages, and I heard their plans for freedom. Already the intellectuals believed that another world war was inevitable. They had been bitterly disappointed after the first world war by what they felt, were the broken promises of England.

The English, they declared had no real purpose to restore India to the people. I could believe it fresh as I was from China. Where the period of people’s Tutelage seemed endless and self government further off every year. ‘When you are ready for independence, conquerors have always said to their subjects, etcetra ! But who is to decide when that moment comes and how can people learn to govern themselves except by doing it ?

So the intellectuals in India were Restless and embittered, and I sat though hours watching their plashing dark eyes and.

India Through A Traveller’s Eyes Summary in Hindi

India Through a Travellers Eyes

A Child is Born Summary in English

The essay “A child is Born” is written by Germain Greer. In this essay she has thoroughly examined the cultural peculiarities of the East and the west regarding child-birth and parent-child relationship.

The author explains the ways of managing-child birth in traditional societies. According to greer there are many ways. Some of them are diverted to one other. Their usefulness may be seen in the fact that they are culturally and collectively accepted. In this way their mother does not have mental burden to find out the new ways (methods) of course of action. A woman who follows the legitimate ways and religious ceremony will be able to come across the problem. She will have other stronger set in observing many activities relating to religious ceremony. This will increase her sense of security and she will realise that she is conducting the pregnancy and not that it is conducting her. Some educated women are found a victim of superstition and adopting old, unscientific methods of delivery (child-birth) which is really bad.

Mortality of infant and mother is higher in traditional births. Every body will accept that each infant and particularly every maternal death is a tragedy to be prevented if at all possible. In many societies, women go to live with their mother-in-law from mother’s houses after marriage. It is an evident truth that such women do not become members of their new family until they have born a child. In eastern countries woman would lose her own name and become known as the mother of her first-born. Mostly their own title (lineage) would be changed after their husband’s surname. But in the west, she would not lose her own name after her marriage.

There is a custom in the Sylheti woman (woman belongs to Sylhet district of Bangladesh). If her parents are alive, she goes to her mother’s house for the last few months of her pregnancy and remains there about the first three months of the baby’s birth. There she gets a lot of love and care. In Bangladesh children under the age of five or six years are looked after by the whole family. The children play out of doors with natural objects. Here people say that Asian children do not play with toys.

In Bangladesh they do not need toys. They make their own simple things. In south Africa, in “Bantu woman’s case birth of a child of a pregnant lady is far from normal.

The authoress says that the main obstacles for the modem western technology for reaching in huts and small cottage is poverty, still the cultural dominance of western technology has achieved its Objectives.

Seibei was a twelve years old boy, and he was still in primary school. He lived with his parents in a small harbour town in Japan. He was passionately fond of collecting gourds. On his way back home from school, he would wander along the streets of the town looking for a gourd of his choice. He had come to know of every place in the town where gourds were sold. If he found a gourd he liked, he bought it for a few sen. and brought it home. He liked only even and symmetrical gourds.

Preparing a gourd : In the evening Seibei would sit cross-legged in the comer of the living room. He would first make a neat hole in the top of the gourd, and take out the seeds. Then he applied tea-leaves to get rid of the unpleasant gourd-smell.

When he had finished treating it, he poured in a little sake and stopped the hole with a cork-stopper. Then he would wrap it in a towel and put it in a tin. Then he put the whole of this in the charcoal footwarmer.

Next morning he would take out the gourd and hung it in the sun to dry. Then he spent days polishing its surface with a little sake.

The Bekin gourd: One evening while Seibei was polishing one of his gourds, his father and his father’s friend were discussing gourds. They talked of Bekin’s gourd. It was kept at the agriculture fair. It had been a sensation. Seibe’s father and his friend had also seen it. They said it was a beautiful gourd. Seibei too had been to see it. He remarked it was a clumsy big thing. His father rebuked him for making these comments. His father discouraged him too. His father’s friend advised him to collect one or two unusual gourds. Just making a collection was of no use.

Seibei finds a gourd of his choice: One day Seibei saw an old woman selling fruit and vegetables. She had a string of gourds too. Seibei saw among them a small gourd. He was excited. The woman offered it for ten sen. Seibei did not have die money. He asked the woman to hold the gourd for him. He ran home to bring the money. He bought the gourd.

The gourd causes trouble: Seibei was engrossed with polishing the gourd all the time. He even took it to school. It was lesson of ethics but Seibei was polishing the gourd under his seat. The teacher belonged to another part of Japan. He disapproved collection of gourds. He was angry with Seibei and confiscated the gourd.

Seibei’s father smashes all the gourds: The teacher went to Seibei’s home. Seibei’s father worked in a carpenter’s shop. He had not come home yet. The teacher complained against Seibei to his mother. He told her that it was parents’ responsibility to keep children away from stupid pastimes.

When Seibei’s father came home, he learned what the teacher had said. He rebuked Seibei and beat him. Then he smashed all the gourds that Seibei had polished with great care. This was the end of Seibei’s passion for Collecting gourds.

The confiscated gourd: The teacher gave the confiscated gourd to a porter who kept it in his hut for some time. One day the porter was in need of money. He took the gourd to a Curio-dealer. After some hard bargaining, the Curio-dealer paid fifty Yen for the gourd to the porter.
But the porter kept it a secret. Later the Curio-dealer sold the gourd to a wealthy collector for six hundred yen.

Seibei takes to painting pictures: Seibei could not collect gourds any longer. He now took to painting pictures, though his father often discourages him and rebuke him.
